Daskalova Kushta (teacher’s house) in Triavna is the place where the only specialized woodcarving museum in Bulgaria is situated. The house itself has been named a monument of culture, since it carries the typical Triavna revival style. Construction took place between 1804 and 1808.
While decorating the house, local craftsmen decided to compete in the creation of the most beautiful woodcarving. The two worked nearly six months on the ceilings of two rooms.
As a result, sun carvings decorate the two ceilings. The outcome of the competition is unknown but it was considered the first arts competition to be carried out in the country. As a result, the house turned into a museum dedicated to woodcarving.
A collection of various woodcarvings can be seen there. Some of them represent wooden sculptures of Bulgarian hans, kings and revolutionaries.
The museum is situated on 27 P. R. Slaveikov street and is open for visitors from 9 am to 5 pm in the winter and to 7 pm in the summer. For more information call 0677/ 21 66. Triavna has various other landmarks and to learn more about them click here.
