Kurdzhali History Museum
The museum is situated in a building that was named an architecture monument and has a large, well-maintained park. Construction took place in the 20s of the 20th century. Initially the building was to be used as a Muslim religious school but it never served the purpose. It resembles a medieval castle.
The building was renovated in 1983, when the first exposition was placed in the museum. The three floors have an area of 1300 sq m, all used to host various artifacts.
More than 27 000 objects have been put on display. The museum traces Kurdzhali's history, as well as developments in the region. Some of the most interesting collections focus on recent Perperikon and Tatoul discoveries.
To visit the museum, go to 4 Repoublikanska street. It welcomes visitors each day apart from Monday, from 9 am to 5 pm. More information about Kurdzhali is available here.
Perperikon
A major archeology complex that brings together remains of several time periods and civilizations. Perperikon is located in the east Rhodope Mountain region, 15 km away from Kurdzhali. Over the years, both archaeologists and treasure hunters explored the slopes. Massive excavation began in 2000 and is still ongoing.
The big stone temple on the hill shows that a developed civilization lived there. Archaeologists are still uncertain of the construction method used, since they found no signs of metal utensils.
Scientists also discovered remains of a fortress wall and an early Christian church.
The outlines of some streets and residential buildings have also been uncovered.
