Trekking is a somehow modern name for hiking in the mountains. Bulgaria offers enough opportunities for the practice of this tourism type.
What makes this type of tourism very attractive is that it requires no special equipment and training. All you need is a backpack with water and some food and comfortable shoes. Research in advance some of the trekking paths near you.
Vitosha, Stara Planina, the Rhodopes, Rila and Pirin offer trekking options.
If you decide to follow a longer path, do that during the spring and summer. Winter is suitable only for short hikes, especially if you lack experience.
To deal with any uncertainty, enlist for one of the organized mountain walks that many clubs offer. Contact a tourism agency or any extreme sports club to check for such options.
