Travel 20 km east of the town of Gabrovo to visit the town of Triavna. This central Bulgarian town acted as an economic and craftsmen center. The Triavna art school, the oldest one in Bulgaria, appeared in the town. Its works of art became popular in Serbia, Romania and Russia. Triavna art includes wood carvings, icons and architecture masterpieces.
The woodcarving and ethnographic museum is one of Triavna’s must sees. Triavna architecture preserve has its authentic houses and revival shops. One of the town’s weirdest landmarks is the museum of African art.
Famous Bulgarian poet Pencho Slaveikov was born in Triavna. His father Petko R. Slaveikov, a writer and education activist, worked in one of the oldest schools in the country.
Diado Nikola square and Popangelova house are two other landmarks. The old clock tower, Triavna’s bridge, Kachaounska district and St. Archangel Mihail church are other interesting sites.
Local restaurants and mehanas have rich menus. Make sure to try the Triavna mushroom soup. Triavna tarator (a yoghurt dish) is prepared in a special way that affects its taste and makes it different from the traditional dish
