Triavna is a town hidden between Gabrovo and Veliko Turnovo. Road signs in Gabrovo and at Triavna’s exit show respectively 17 and 19 km but despite the difference, the distance between the two is approximately 20 km. The distance from Veliko Turnovo is 40 to 45 km if you manage to hit the correct road.
When you visit Triavna for the first time, especially if you head to it from a big urban area, you will certainly notice its peacefulness. Yet, activity in Triavna has never stopped and it is not frozen in time like other small Bulgarian settlements.
You will next notice how clean Triavna is. A long time before major cities started discussing recycling practices Triavna had already introduced separate waste collection.
If driving to Triavna, you can park your car behind the municipality. Its building has been entirely renovated and impresses with the new looks. During the summer, all of the façades on the central streets will welcome you covered in flowers. Explore the fountain on the central square. Though beautiful, someone has already managed to damage it. The small garden around the fountain features hidden speakers that will let you enjoy beautiful music while relaxing.
On the central square you will also see the former bath, which has been turned into a museum. A stork nest has been standing on its chimney over the past years. This adds further to the peaceful ambience.
Follow the street between the municipal parking lot and the fountain garden and you will reach Triavna’s brewery. It has specialized in the production of Belgian beer. Quantities are small and the beer is available for consumption in the town only. Three types of beer are produced there, all of which are worth a try.
Have a beer and continue following the street. You will reach Triavna’s most popular tourism landmark. The clock cannot be described. Simply go there and see it. The church is more interesting with its beautiful yard, icons and woodcarvings.
Woodcarving is one of Triavna’s top crafts. A woodcarving school was developed there. Some of its finest works can be seen in Daskalova house on the Old Street. The street has been named a preserve because of its houses featuring traditional architecture. Small shops there offer visitors souvenirs. Craftsmen will create in front of you dolls and traditional folk items.
Please do not enter the Old Street in your car, though this is not strictly banned. Try to preserve Triavna’s calmness unharmed.
