The majestic Stara Planina Mountain houses the old Troyan monastery. Yet, this beautiful spot has lost some of its charm due to the commercial goals of merchants. They managed to turn the monastery into a tourism attraction. Still, the monastery kept some of its charm and authenticity.
Troyan monastery is situated 10 km away from the town of Troyan. A good road leads to it and public transportation from Troyan is available.
Ouspenie Bogorodichno monastery has its miracle-making icon. Sveta Bogoroditsa Troerouchitsa is kept in the monastery since the 13th century. It was previously kept in Serbia.
According to historians, the monastery was constructed during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. It expanded several times. In 1866, the monastery got its unique tower. In the past, the tower had decorations and parts of the drawings have been preserved on the second floor.
Though construction of the monastery buildings happened in several phases, the complex kept its architectural unity.
One of the painters who worked on the decorations was Zahari Zograph. He left a self-portrait alongside the other wall paintings. Woodcarvings also form the church’s decorations.
In 1872, the Bulgarian revolutionary Vassil Levski created a secret committee and saw the support of the monastery monks. The committee used to meet in the monastery.
Troyan monastery offers accommodation. Call in advance, since interest in the destination is quite high.
Accommodation is also possible in the vicinities of the monastery. The villas in Cherni Osum village and the hotels in Troyan, Ribaritsa and Shipkovo offer good conditions.
