Turgovishte is a town that keeps historic evidence from various epochs. The modern town appeared shortly after Bulgarian lands came under Ottoman rule. Mainly Ottomans lived there. Over the years, Bulgarians also settled there. Yet, the town kept its oriental looks until the end of the 19th century.
Its name was Eski Dzhoumaia. The town hosted one of the biggest Ottoman fairs. Eski Dzhoumaia developed into a major craftsmen center that had trade relations with various European countries. The fair took place each year until the end of thw 19th century. It was recently renewed.
In 1934, the town got its current name.
The town has several landmarks. Some of them are the history museum, the revival district of Varosh, St. Sedmochislenitsi church and several house-museums.
