More than 70 years ago, the home of the great Bulgarian revolutionary Vassil Levski was restored and turned into a museum.
The house looks just like it did hundreds of years ago. Hidden behind a white wall amongst the box-trees and the vine, the house appears just as if a loving hostess has just decorated it with colorful rag carpets, crockery and copper containers, loom and spinning wheel and the dyer’s workshop for the woolen braid.
Vassil Ivanov Kounchev, known as Vassil Levski, was born there on July 18 1837. He became the moving force behind the Bulgarian movement for national liberation during the Ottoman period.
In the years after Bulgaria gained independence, the house was abandoned and almost destroyed by time and nature. In 1933, it underwent restoration, yet the original looks were kept. Four years later, the museum was set up.
Levski’s birthplace is one of the most visited museum-houses in Bulgaria. People see it as a sacred place. To visit, you have to travel to the west part of Karlovo, on the road to Sopot.
Apart from Levski’s house, the museum complex includes:
- An exposition hall, displaying Levski’s personal belongings, as well as documents and pictures of the revolutionary.
- Levski’s wax figure, placed in the room for temporary exhibitions.
- A little souvenir shop functions in Chardaklieva house.
- The memorial chapel in the yard treasures a lock of Levski’s hair.
The museum is open for visitors every day from 8.30am till 1pm and from 2pm till 5pm. The address of the museum is General Kartsov Street 57, Karlovo, phone 0335/ 934 89,
