The river of Veleka is one of the most beautiful and rich in fish rivers in Bulgaria. Veleka originates in Turkey but only the first 23 km of the river flow in the neighboring country.
On its way to the Black Sea, Veleka changes several times its type. The river enters the sea through a firth, which channels its slow waters.
Though Veleka is a wide and calm river, it is navigable only in the final 10 km before entering the sea. The mouth of Veleka forms one of the most beautiful beaches in Bulgaria, the northern beach of Sinemorets.
If you decide to take a walk and explore the forest, you have two options. You can take the marked path that starts a kilometer away from the river’s mouth. Walk against the current and enjoy the beautiful view. The route is nearly 10 km long and is well-marked. If you get tired, rest in the summer houses along the way.
The walk ends in the village of Brodilovo. You can learn more about the route and get a map in the Sinemorets municipality.
Another option includes a boat ride. During the past years, local people started organizing river walks. Ask people in Sinemorets about these walks and they will let you know who the best guide is.
During the summer, many people visit Sinemorets. They are all lured by the opportunity to spend their vacation in a peaceful and beautiful place.
The final curves of Veleka before it enters the sea offer excellent fishing opportunities. A sandy dune is the most preferred place since this dune separates the river from the sea. This part offers seclusion since the seabed is rocky and unsuitable for swimming.
More than 30 types of fish inhabit the waters of Veleka. Some marine species can be seen there as well. Apart from fish, Veleka is the home of turtles and snakes. A number of rare plant species line the river shore.
Since Veleka’s shore is protected territory, it would be best to enjoy nature without harming it. Few places in Bulgaria have the virginal beauty of Veleka and Strandzha. Do your best to enjoy your vacation without affecting the region.
