The biggest statue of Virgin Mary and baby Jesus in the world is situated in Haskovo and is one of the town’s symbols.
Haskovo’s statue is 14 m high and has been placed on a 17 m platform. The statue has been granted a Guinness World Book of Records certificate. Sculptors Petio Alexandrov and Nikola Stoianov are responsible for its creation.
The official opening of the complex took place on September 8 2003.
Virgin Mary’s statue weights 80 tons and its overall height exceeds 31 m. Because of its impressive height, the monument can be seen from all parts of the town. A small chapel has been constructed in the foot of the monument.
For centuries Virgin Mary has been considered Haskovo patron. Her day according to the Orthodox church is September 8 and a number of culture and entertainment events take place in Haskovo to commemorate the occasion.
