This region includes the land on the bank of Strouma River, south of the town of Doupnitsa. Lands situated near the towns of Melnik and Sandanski feature the best conditions for grape-growing. Shiroka Melnishka Loza is a type of vine that grows only there. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are also grown.
Some major wineries are situated in Damyanitsa, Sandanski, Blagoevgrad, Petrich and the village of Hursovo.
Melnik Winery is situated close to the town of Petrich. It functions only since 1999. The cellar produces both red and white wines, including Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and. The highest quality brand is called Ekstaz (ecstasy).
Mira Wine Cellar is another producer who is active only since 1993. It is situated in the town of Sandanski. It produces wine using Shiroka Melnishka Loza, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and the local Keratsuda.
Vinprom Damyanitsa is situated in the village by the same name, Sandanski region. This winery is one of the most refined in the country. It started functioning in 1940 and underwent renovation in 1997. The region features excellent grape-growing conditions. The cellar works mainly with Shiroka Melnishka Loza, Cabernet Fran, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Over the past year, Damyanitsa started producing some real quality wines among which No Man's Land, Uniqato, ReDark and the new Prestige brand.
