The fertile lands of southeastern Bulgaria, near the shore of Toundzha River, house the beautiful town of Yambol. Its history is ancient and according to data, Yambol was found in the 3rd century by Emperor Diocletian.
Diocletian, who traveled in the region, was impressed by the beauty of nature. He created a settlement named Diospolis, or the town of god. Through time, the name of the town changed several times until it became Yambol.
During the Ottoman rule, Yambol developed into a big commerce and agriculture center. Today it still has one monument from that period. Bezistena represents a huge covered market.
Apart from Bezistena, Yambol has several other interesting landmarks. The history museum houses nearly 100 000 items, collected over the past 100 years. Volunteers and various archaeological organizations gathered these items. Yambol’s art gallery also has a huge collection of more than 3000 Bulgarian and foreign works of art.
The church of St. George has centuries of history and played important role in the cultural and revolutionary development of the town.
Eski Dzhamia is the only construction, apart from Bezistena, that has been preserved from Ottoman times till present day.
The remains of the ancient settlement Kabile have been uncovered several kilometers away from the town.
If you have enough time, visit the astronomical observatory and the town’s planetarium. This is the only such facility in this part of Bulgaria. To relax, visit the town’s park set up on an island in Toundzha River.
