If you plan to visit Yambol, make sure to take a walk in its center. There, you will find two beautiful architecture landmarks that have been preserved in their authentic state from the Ottoman period.
The bazaar is located in the very heart of town. This is a unique covered meat market dating back to the 15th century. It was constructed following the model of other similar buildings in the Ottoman empire. In 1972, the bazaar was nearly destroyed and later on renovated.
Architecture of the building is worth taking a close look at. No other building in Bulgaria resembles it. Oriental ornaments combine with the large domes and will take you back in time. According to experts, the bazaar is suitable for concerts because of the wonderful acoustics.
Across the bazaar you will see the second largest mosque in Bulgaria. Eski mosque was constructed in 1373, right after the Ottoman empire took over Bulgarian territories. The mosque has three entrances but only the northern one is used. Wall paintings from the 17th century have been preserved. The massive dome is another impressive element.
Both landmarks are located on Osvobozhdenie square in central Yambol.
