Zhaba Mogila’s Thracian tomb is situated several km away from the town of Strelcha. Archaeologist Georgi Kitov discovered the tomb in the 70s of the 20th century.
Archaeologists believe that a Thracian ruler was buried there. The burial ceremony probably took place much after the construction of the tomb.
The tomb dates back to the 5th and 4th century BC. It suffered plunders but archaeologists managed to find some interesting artifacts. A chariot and harness were found there. The tomb’s entrance was also preserved and the stones used in the construction show images of Thracian gods and floral ornaments.
A temple is situated on the other side of the mound. Lion figures were placed on sides of entrance. One of them was moved to the National History Museum in Sofia. The temple has three chambers.
To reach the mound, follow the brown signs directing tourists. Once you reach the railroad, leave your car behind and walk, since the area is hardly accessible.
The mound lacks signs and no guides will tell you its story. Research the landmark in advance and visit the Strelcha history museum to learn more about it. The artifacts found in the area have been moved to this museum.
