Zhrebchevo dam is situated in an exceptionally beautiful region and surrounded by dense forests and green meadows.
The dam is located on the territory of Nova Zagora, Tvurditsa and Gourkovo municipalities. The closest populated area is the village of Panicheri in Gourkovo municipality.
Zhrebchevo is the third biggest dam in the country and ranks after Iskur and Stouden Kladenets. It was constructed in 1965 over the territory of Zhrebchevo village. The residents of the village migrated to nearby settlements.
The length of the dam is 15 km and its depth varies. During the summer, the water is used for irrigation and the dam depth decreases significantly.
Numerous types of fish inhabit the dam waters. Zhrebchevo is a popular place among fishermen and their most favorite spot is the Roman bridge over Toundzha. Fishing is possible both in the shallow and the deeper parts of the dam. Old fishermen say that the Zhrebchevo fish is quite whimsical and sometimes fishermen could lack luck for a period as long as several weeks.
Apart from the wonderful fishing experience, the dam features numerous beautiful spots, where you can have a picnic or position your tent. If you happen to dislike tent accommodation, you can make use of the bungalows, villas and small hotels that were constructed near the lake.
Zhrebchevo dam is a humid area of international importance for the preservation of migrating birds. Over 33 types of birds nest there each year. Some of them have been included in the Bulgarian Red Book of rare species. In 2005, the dam was named a place of ornithological importance.
