Bansko will host two rounds of the international women alpine skiing championship in 2009, Monitor daily reported. The International Skiing Federation (FIS) took the decision during a summit in Cape Town. Bansko received higher support than its competitor, the Italian resort Treviso.
The two rounds will take place on February 28 and on March 1 2009. Until present, Bulgaria has hosted such championships twice, in 1981 and 1984. Both tournaments took place in the resort of Borovets.
These championship can significantly aid tourism development in Bansko, the town's mayor Alexander Kravarov said.
World-famous athletes like Janica Kostelić and Kjetil André Aamodt find Bansko to be among the best skiing resorts in the world. They draw a comparison between Bansko and winter centers in the US.
