Archaeologist Georgi Kitov launched Archaeological Summer 2008 on June 5 in the town of Sliven, Darik Radio reported.
Nine mounds in the region will be explored this summer. Six are situated near Staro Selo and three are close to the village of Kroushare.
Kitov officially launched work and excavation will continue to the west and south. Archaeologists believe that some of the finds will be unique since one mound certainly belonged to a Thracian aristocrat.
Another interesting site near Staro Selo is a Roman village that also features a necropolis.
Kitov said that the expedition will try to prove that the Valley of Thracian Kings expands to the Sliven region, following the flow of Toundzha.
Work will continue three months and will cost 250 000 leva.
