Bansko mayor Alexander Kravarov opened the summer season in the mountain resort and during a press conference presented Bansko's tourism strategy for the upcoming season. Music and theater events, sports championships and spa and rural tourism opportunities all feature among the tools to be used to attract tourists, news.club.bg reported.
Kravarov said that Bansko has to turn into a year-round resort. Currently the resort welcomes between 600 000 and 700 000 tourists during the winter and three to four times fewer people during the summer.
The lack of qualified tourism staff is one of the main hindrances. Novinar daily quoted Kravarov as saying that nearly half of Bansko's hotels remain closed during the summer, since the employees go working in Greece.
Over-construction is another major obstacle, Kravarov said. Bansko's legal accommodation capacity in 12 000 beds but the unofficial figure is 3000 beds higher.
