Slowdown, despite positive tourism data in Bulgaria
The number of foreign tourists who came to Bulgaria in 2007 has increased in comparison to 2006 figures.

The growth reached seven percent and tourism revenue in 2007 totaled 2.3 billion euro. Nearly 70 percent of the foreign visitors came from EU countries, mainly from Romania, Greece, Germany, the UK and Finland.

Despite the positive data, Bulgarian tourism is expected to experience a slowdown in 2008. Poor service, overconstruction and the lack of overall marketing strategy affect the sector.

Center for Economic Development (CED) prognoses show that the upcoming summer season will not register the same high tourist levels as preceding seasons. Some of the main foreign markets will be lost and others will maintain last year’s levels.

A serious decrease is to be expected in the number of Scandinavian and British tourists. Russian bookings show growth potential, which is expected to reach 20 percent.
