Chernomorets is a small resort village situated 25 km away from Bourgas and eight km north of Sozopol. Until 1951, it carried the name St. Nikola. According to researchers, the village appeared in the first half of the 17th century.

Today, the village has managed to differentiate itself from noisy coastal resorts. The village has four beaches. The shoreline is narrow but its length compensates for the setback. Gradina camp is situated two km away from Chernomorets and is a favorite place of surfing and nature lovers.

Accommodation opportunities are quite diverse. Chernomorets lacks major hotel complexes, which has preserved it as a quiet and peaceful place for rest. Small family-type hotels and guest houses abound.

A long and steep street leads from the center of the village to the main beach. The street features numerous small shops that offer souvenirs and clothes.

Irakli is a beautiful, wild area, located several kilometers away from the town of Obzor, close to the village of Emona.

Its beach is nearly three km long. The nearby forest, combined with the sea outlet, make the place suitable for camping and spending some time away from the city in a tent.

Groups of young people gather in the area each summer. They have already formed their small community of nature lovers and nudists. According to tradition, rockers from all parts of Bulgaria gather there on July 1 to welcome the sun on July Morning.

The beach ends close to the rocky cape of Emine. Visitors can spot dolphins there. The large clams sometimes carry tiny pearls. You only need some luck to find the right one.

A path takes willing walkers to the tiny village of Emona in half an hour. The walk through the shady forest gives you the chance to experience nature and even see...

Bulgaria’s oldest resort, St. Konstantin and Elena is located several kilometers north of the city of Varna.

The resort is still known sometimes under its socialist-era name, Drouzhba. Construction started in 1908 and since then the resort has been the spot that Bulgarian aristocrats preferred. The palace of Evksinograd is located there.

St. Konstantin and Elena carries the name of a small chapel. It was constructed as a part of a monastery honoring emperor Constantine and his mother Helena.

Ancient aristocrats from the Roman and Byzantine empires traveled to the spot, well-known for its healing mineral springs. One of these springs flows into the sea and has turned nowadays into one of the resort’s biggest attractions.

Accommodation options include hotels and private villas. The resort’s infrastructure is in good condition and roads connect...

The town of Primorsko is located 52 km south of Bourgas on a colorful peninsula in the foot of Strandzha Mountain.

Primorsko and the nearby territories have their rich history. Early data shows that an ancient settlement was found on the area where currently the town is located. This settlement was involved in trade and commerce with other states.

Artifacts found in the area made historians believe that the settlement was the ancient town of Ranouli. Visitors can see the remains of the city walls on Vulchanovo Kale hill, close to the town.

In 2003 archaeologists found a sanctuary that they had been long looking for. They believed that the sanctuary must be located somewhere close to the remains of the ancient city. The sanctuary and observatory of Beglik Tash was constructed using large stone blocks, arranged in irregular circles. The sunlight, passing through the cracks...

Any ideas what the common thing between the cape of Kaliakra, clam farms, caves, rare bird species and beautiful bays is? Here is a clue - all of these are located very close to the village of Bulgarevo.

Bulgarevo is situated close to the cape of Kaliakra and since recently it offers opportunities for calm seaside rest in village surroundings.

The population of Bulgarevo is only 1500 people. Yet, the village offers various accommodation opportunities. A number of websites list the offers of villas, family hotels and private dwellings in Bulgarevo.

What makes Bulgarevo an interesting place is the fact that its residents are of Gagauz origin. These people speak a modified form of the Turkish language but practice East Orthodox religion. Some old traditions have been preserved in the village.

The history of the town of Balchik is more than 2000 years old. The first evidence of the town’s development comes from Thracian objects found there. Though it became a Greek settlement, Balchik was initially found by the Thracians.

Balchik carried the name of Krounoi (probably a Thracian one) and Dionysopolis, after one of the Greek gods. When the first Greek settlers traveled to the area, they were enchanted by the nature and fertile land. The grapes that grew there were used for the production of wine, which made the Greeks name the settlement after the God of wine Dionysus.

The settlement gradually grew into strategic trade and marine center. Romans tried to conquer it various instances and their attacks made locals leave. The town started to decline.

Two stories tell how the name of the town came to be Balchik. According to the first theory Balchik is a word of...

Emine Cape is one of the most charming places in Bulgaria’s coastal region. This windy and wild cliff is situated 54 km north of Bourgas and about 14 km south of the small Black Sea town of Obzor.

The cape is the easternmost part of Stara Planina Mountain. Thus, Emine is often used as the divisive mark between the southern and the northern coastline.

Emine cape is actually a 60-m high vertical cliff surrounded by numerous underwater rocks. These are scattered nearly 250 m from the shore, inside the sea.

A lighthouse still functions at the cape. It was opened on December 15 1880.

Emine is one of the stormiest regions in the country. It was named a nature landmark in 1976.

Numerous legends have been told about the cape and its lighthouse. According to one, an old sailor and his daughter lived in the lighthouse. She was more beautiful than the sunrise that...

Obzor is one of the oldest settlements on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. Set up nearly 3000 years ago, the town carried the Thracian name of Navlohos. As it became a Greek colony, the settlement got the name of Heliopolis or the town of the sun.

In the first century BC, Romans conquered Heliopolis and changed the name once again. The town became known as Theopolis and a temple of Jupiter was constructed there.

The Byzantine period saw the construction of the emperor’s summer residence in the town.

Remains of ancient buildings, among which those of the temple have been preserved in Obzor’s central part.

The little town of Kiten is located 55 km south of Bourgas. It is found between the towns of Primorsko and Tsarevo.

Kiten’s older part is set on the small peninsula of Ourdoviza, separated from the mainland by a narrow strip of land.

Ancient finds signify that the town has rich history. Remains of clay dishes take archaeologists back to Thracian times.
The contemporary settlement was found in 1932 by immigrants from eastern Thrace. These people constructed houses specifically. From distance the houses resemble a bouquet of flowers, which gave the town its name- Kiten.

Some remains of the ancient fortress Ourdoviza are located near Kiten.

Legends have been told about the place, just like about many other Bulgarian settlements. According to the story, a local girl promised to marry the Ottoman ruler at the time. She had one condition. The sultan had to free from...

One of the most beautiful beaches in Bulgaria, Silistar, is located several kilometers south of the village of Sinemorets, on the road to the village of Rezovo.

The river under the name of Silistar flows in the sea at that point. This predetermines the rich plant life in the area. Many types of birds, animals and fish inhabit the area.

Silistar is a protected area in the park of Strandzha. It gets the status of a preserve in 1992. Part of the plant and animal species found there are rare.

The beach is nearly kilometer long and 50 m wide. Though it is quite small, the beach is exceptionally beautiful. Cliffs line the shore, the sand is white and the water is clear. The seafloor is excellent for swimming.

Divers get excellent opportunities to practice their hobby. You should be careful, though, since the many underwater caves create suction.

The village of Rezovo is the southernmost point on the Bulgarian Black Sea coastline.

Rezovo is located on the border between Bulgaria and Turkey. Nearly 15 km south of Ahtopol, the village is located close to a river carrying the same name.

St. Ivan island is one of the five islands close to the Bulgarian Black Sea shore. The island is situated 2 km north of Sozopol and is the tallest Bulgarian islands.

In 1993, St. Ivan was named a protected territory in order to preserve a number of endangered bird species nesting there. Over 70 types of birds inhabit the area, making locals come up with the name The Bird Island. Some of the birds are included in the Bulgarian Red Book of Endangered Species.

Apart from the beautiful nature, St. Ivan is known for its historic landmarks. A Thracian sanctuary dating back to the 7th and 6th centuries BC was situated there.

Upon their arrival, Greek colonizers destroyed the sanctuary and constructed a temple honoring Apollo. A 13-m statue of the god appeared on the island. It was later on moved.

Ancient history which left its mark, combined with the modernity of a popular resort characterizes the coastal town of Sozopol.

The town was found in 620 BC. Settlers from Asia Minor found their new home there and called the town Apollonia, after one of the most revered Greek gods.

Apollonia grew rapidly and soon the space on the tiny peninsula where it was set up became insufficient. Part of the settlers was forced to move to the nearby lands. This resettlement led to the appearance of a number of coastal cities among which Pomorie, Kiten, Ahtopol and Bourgas.

The town continued gaining importance as a trade center. Its harbor turned into a major regional trade channel.

After the conversion to Christianity, the town got a new name, Sozopol, or the city of salvation.

During the centuries to come, after the formation of the Bulgarian state, Sozopol was in the center of...

Hidden between the capes of St. Anastasia and Atia lies St. Anastasia island. The biggest island on Bulgarian territory is situated only 6.5 km away from the coastal city of Bourgas. Its area is 8.5 decares and the height is 12 m. St. Anastasia appeared as a result of a volcanic eruption.

The island has intriguing history. Numerous legends have been told about it.

Objects from the 5th and 4th centuries AD found there show that human activity on the island started long time ago.

A monastery functions there, as well. According to historians, the monastery was set up as far back in time as 1553.

Ropotamo preserve is situated 50 km south of the coastal city of Bourgas. It includes the banks of Ropotamo River. Ropotamo is one of the oldest preserves in Bulgaria, named as such in 1940.

In 1962, Ropotamo lost its preserve status. Coastal over construction and the increasingly growing number of tourists made authorities name Ropotamo a protected area once again in 1992.

The preserve houses untypical for the latitude plant species. It is also well-known for the beautiful rock phenomena, dunes and swamps.

Ropotamo’s banks are covered by thick forests. Some important plant species used in the production of medicines can be seen there.

More than 100 Ropotamo plant species have been included in Bulgaria’s red book of endangered plants.

The region acted as a harbor in the distant past. Archaeologists discovered there anchors dating back to the 6th century BC. The settlement at that time was located near a Roman fortress.

Biala’s territory became part of the First Bulgarian Kingdom right after its formation. There, scientists found one of the most important artifacts carrying the early Bulgarian writing system. The Stone from Biala can be seen today in Sofia’s National History Museum.

Ottoman historic writings mention Biala, mainly in connection to the uprisings that locals participated in.

The settlement saw development after the end of World War II. It was named a town in 1984....

Aheloi is a small tourism settlement situated between Ravda and Pomorie. The village itself is away from the coastline, which prevented it from turning into a mass summer resort.

The road connecting Bourgas to Varna passes through Aheloi and makes the village hectic during the summer. The proximity of Pomorie, Bourgas and Sunny Beach is also a benefit for those who have limited budget and select the inexpensive accommodation in Aheloi.

Numerous accommodation opportunities are available in the village. It has restaurants and cafés that offer good quality of service. Aheloi has additional facilities like a harbor suitable for both boats and yachts.

Aheloi is known for a historic battle between Bulgarians and Byzantines that took place in 917. Bulgarians managed to gain victory since tsar Simeon, the current ruler, participated in the battle alongside his soldiers....

Most Bulgarian children remember the village of Ravda because until recently it was popular as a school trip destination. The village is situated between Aheloi and Nessebar, 30 km north of Bourgas.

Today, Ravda and Nessebar have nearly merged. Southern Black Sea resorts and towns like Nessebar, Sunny Beach, St. Vlas and Elenite have practically become one.

Mass construction occurred in Ravda, just like in many other coastal resorts. The once small and charming village has turned into a concrete complex that features numerous hotels but poor infrastructure.

Yet, Ravda has managed to preserve some of its peacefulness in comparison to the nearby Nessebar and Sunny Beach. The village is preferred destination of families having small children. Its beach features entertainment opportunities and tourism attractions.

Schools still organize trips for their students there and...

The biggest Black Sea harbor south of Bourgas is situated in the town of Tsarevo and is rather popular because of its proximity to the Bosporus.

Tsarevo is situated 70 km away from Bourgas and nearly 460 km away from Sofia. In the past, the town carried the names Vasilikou, Vasiliko and Michourin.

The harbor has been used in the distant past. Archaeologists found dishes and imported ceramics from the 4th to 6th centuries.

Vasilikou was mentioned in historic writings for the first time in the 12th century.

Over the years, Vasiliko gained popularity as a fishing and a ship construction center. Its proximity to Strandzha and the availability of timber developed the industry. Vasiliko’s fleet reached 42 ships in the first half of the previous century.

Lozenets is a resort village in Tsarevo municipality, which significantly expanded over the past years.

The village is situated 65 km south of the town of Bourgas, between Kiten and Tsarevo. It was founded in the 20s of the 20th century and initially acted as a villa zone of the village of Velika.

Tourists can make use of two beaches in Lozenets, Central and Tarfa. Both have lifeguards and are clean. Naturally, cafés and restaurants abound. The beaches offer good conditions for the practice of various water sports like surfing, diving and fishing.

Near Lozenets, you can discover the beaches of several ex-camps like Koral, Iug and Oasis. Nature park Strandzha is situated nearby, starting from the village of Velika. Ahtopol is located 90km south of the coastal town of Bourgas and is one of the sunniest and warmest places on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast.

Because of the sunny weather, the temperature of the sea water remains high and bathing is viable from May to October. Ahtopol is located within a rocky peninsula in the foot of Strandzha Mountain. The beach is 2km long and covered with fine, white sand.

The town carries evidence of various historic periods, from ancient times to recent developments. The earliest signs indicate the settlement was used by the Thracians. Romans got control over the place in the 6th century BC and named it Peronticus.

Later, the Byzantine ruler Agaton renewed the settlement after barbarian forays and gave it the name Agatopolis. Slightly modified, the name remains until present days and means City of Love.

In XIV century, the town came under Ottoman...

One of the oldest towns in Bulgaria is called Pomorie. The town is located on a rocky peninsula on the road between the coastal city of Bourgas and the resort of Sunny Beach.

Pomorie came in existence in the 5th century BC under the name of Anhialo. Initially it served as a Greek colony of Sozopol. According to historians the name means ‘place close to a salty lake.’ Others believe it means ‘place close to water.’ The second version gave birth to the current name of the town in 1934.

Over the centuries Anhialo acted as one of the major Black Sea coastal cities. Its rival for this central position was the Greek colony of Mesambria (current day Nessebar), also located in the region.

During the Roman period, Anhialo prospered the most. After the Roman Empire accepted Christianity as its religion, the town became a religious center and...

The small town of Kavarna is located on Bulgaria’s northern Black Sea coast. Its population reaches only 13 000 people and its nature, though enchanting, limits the tourist traffic. Kavarna’s shore is rocky and sandy beaches are almost entirely missing.

One other feature attracts hundreds of tourists. Lovers of rock music meet in Kavarna each summer, where they can enjoy a festival and the performances of well-known bands and singers.

According to some, Kavarna still belongs to the 80s. Rock music strongly reminds everyone of the romanticism of past years, though Kavarna is up-to-date.

World-famous musicians and bands perform there each summer, many of them to return for yet another concert. Fans and performers seem to like the coastal town equally.

Alepou is a swamp region that features two small lakes. The area is separated from the sea by sandy dunes that have also been included in the protected area.

Despite its preserve area status, Alepou is already seeing construction. Vacation complexes and hotels have appeared there. Sooner or later construction is going to harm the richness of Alepou’s nature.

The altitude of the region is 250 m above the sea level.

Many plant and animal species inhabit the area. Some of them are rare, while others are untypical for the Bulgarian climatic conditions. Swamps form the lower level of the preserve.

An interesting phenomenon can be observed in Silkosia. Beech trees typically grow in colder areas at higher altitudes, while oaks occupy lower levels. In Silkosia, beech trees grow in the lower parts, while oak trees grow in the upper and colder territories.

Regions with higher humidity feature a number of unusual plant species. The only wild medlar trees in Europe can be seen there.

The cape of Kaliakra is one of the most beautiful and romantic places in Bulgaria. Various legends have been told and wrap the story of the place in mystery. Cape Kaliakra attracts today’s nature lovers, those interested in bird watching, as well as people preferring ancient history.

Kaliakra is located 60 km southeast of Varna, close to the villages of Bulgarevo and St. Nikola. The cape extends two km into the sea and looks like a narrow peninsula. The narrow cliffs rise 70 m above the sea. A number of caves are located there. These can be accessed only via the sea.

The water carved into the cliffs openings and arches, which have been included in numerous legends.

Data shows that Kaliakra was populated as far back as the 4th century BC. The cape carried the name Tirizis, named after the Thracian tribe that lived there.

Sinemorets has preserved its spirit of a coastal village and lacks huge hotels and restaurants and noisy merchants offering souvenirs for sale.

The town lies on the southern slopes of Stara Planina Mountain and offers opportunities both for rest and healing. The proximity of the mountain to the shoreline is suitable for the therapy of respiratory and bone diseases.

Numerous tourism complexes having their own pools compensate for the short shoreline. Tourists can also make use of the beach of the nearby Sunny Beach.

Riviera is located inside a forest close to the shore. Only five hotels have been set up but their luxury meets the quality criteria of the pickiest tourists.

In the past, the hotels served as a governmental rest station. Well-known Bulgarian politicians and public figures spent their vacations there.

Today Riviera offers a seaside vacation away from the noisy alleys and beaches of Golden Sands. Apart from the beach, the resort has several pools, jacuzzis, water sports opportunities, a tennis court and bicycle alleys.

Nessebar is a town having its hundreds of years of history. The town is located north of Bourgas and south of the edge of Stara Planina Mountain and cape Emine.

The old part of town is located on a piece of land only 850 m long and 350 m wide. The area is connected to mainland by a narrow neck of land. Nessebar’s newer part is located on the shore and is expanding rapidly. Expansion has already led to a merger between Nessebar and the nearby resorts and towns.

Nessebar’s history dates back to almost 3000 years, when the town was found. In the end of the Bronze Age, the Thracians settled in the area and called the town Melsambria, after the name of its founder. During that time, the settlement had two harbours. Remains of ancient ships can still be found today.
