Bulgarian tsar Simeon the Great gave the name of the town of Shoumen. According to historic evidence, the town carried the name Shimeonis, or the town of Simeon, in the past.

Shoumen is located in northeastern Bulgaria, nearly 100 km away from Varna.

The town is ancient and witnessed many key historic developments.

One of the most important fortresses in Bulgaria is situated in Shoumen. During the First Bulgarian Kingdom, the fortress protected the old Bulgarian capitals of Pliska and Preslav.

During the revival period, the town grew. A number of cultural institutions appeared for the first time in Shoumen. The first Bulgarian theater play was presented there. Shoumen also hosted the first girl’s school. Many revolutionaries and public figures acted there.

If you decide to examine the central part of Samokov, you will certainly notice the tall and ornate building situated at 49 Turgovska street. Bairakli mosque impresses with its exceptional architecture and decorations.

The mosque was named Iokousha but today everyone calls it Bairakli. It was constructed in the middle of the 19th century probably after the local Ottoman governor required the setting up of a sanctuary.

During the mosque’s restoration, a sanctuary plan carrying the signatures of three Bulgarian craftsmen was discovered. The plan proves that Bulgarians from the Samokov school of art were actively involved in the construction.

Some of the splendid wall paintings were covered right after their creation. Yet, archaeologists have managed to recover some of the beautiful drawings.

Wall paintings cover the entire Bairakli mosque façade. The...

Pazardzhik is one of the biggest towns in southern Bulgaria. It is situated in the western part of the Thracian valley, on the bank of Maritsa River. The distance from Pazardzhik to Sofia is 100 km and to Plovdiv – 35 km.

The area was populated in ancient times. Many mounds and necropolises were found there.

The settlement appeared in 15th century and acted as a merchant center on the road from Europe to Asia Minor. In the coming century, the town became an Ottoman administrative unit. Travelers often wrote about it and mentioned it as a hectic place with large markets.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, Pazardzhik was one of the main Maritsa harbors. The storehouses near the river held wheat, rice, tobacco and timber from the nearby Rhodope Mountain region.

Locals grew vegetables, tobacco and rice and practiced various crafts. Craftsmen and merchants comprised...

The city of Bourgas came into existence almost 2000 years ago. At first it served as a trade and military settlement of the town of Apollonia (Sozopol).

Most of the residents were military veterans. The town had various military and fishermen towers, which led to its name being “Pyrgos,” meaning ‘tower.’ Slight changes lead to the nowadays name of the city.

Bourgas, the current name, is connected to the writings of Ottoman historians, who mention it for the first time in 17th century.

Until the end of the 19th century Bourgas remained small and lacked any major role. The first school and church of the settlement were built in 1868. After the end of the Ottoman rule, Bourgas developed into a modern, European city. A conflagration in XIX century destroyed almost the entire city, which had to be rebuilt afterwards. This event contributed...

The Razlog valley is one of the truly beautiful Bulgarian places, hidden amongst Rila, Pirin and the Rhodope mountains. Parts of Rila and Pirin national parks surround it.

Razlog’s Thracian name used to be Mehomia. According to legends, a Thracian warrior defeated his enemy there and decided to establish a settlement in honor of the victory. The name meant My Victory. Razlog received its current name in 1925.

The Razlog history museum still preserves remains of Thracian times. The region features numerous other historic landmarks. Three medieval fortresses surround it, proving that Razlog was part of medieval Bulgaria’s fortification system.

Some early Christian temples have been discovered there as well. The oldest ones date back to the fifth and fourth centuries.

Early Christian sentiments started surfacing in Silistra. During the First Bulgarian Kingdom, the town turned into a bishop’s center. The Ottoman rule saw Silistra as the battleground of many clashes between Russian and Ottoman armies.

Today Silistra is a relatively small town, yet having rich historic heritage. The town has many museums among which the history and ethnographic museums. The beginning of industrial mining in Bulgaria dates back to 1891. The town of Pernik is still one of the most developed mining centers in the country. Pernik is the place where you will discover a unique museum dedicated to mining. The museum is located in the oldest Bulgarian mine.

Information boards will direct you to the center of Pernik and the museum. You can always ask locals for instructions, since everyone is aware of the museum’s location. In front of the old mine, you will find a sufficiently big parking lot where you can park your car.

The museum welcomed visitors for the first time in 1986. It is unique both for Bulgaria and the Balkan region. Such museums have been established in several countries only.

Museum halls are 630 m long and trace the development of mining through the years.

Southwestern Bulgaria houses the town of Vratsa. It is situated 100 km away from Sofia and is hidden in the folds of Stara Planina Mountain. Historic evidence shows that the region has its inhabitants since ancient times. Vratsa turned into a major regional settlement and a craftmen’s town. Its name came from the Slavic word vratitsa, meaning a small door. The shape of the pass leading to the town produced the name. The pass is narrow and long, resembling a door.

During the Ottoman reign over the region, Vratsa acted as an important settlement and many of its craftsmen became wealthy. Trade and relations with other cities and countries were responsible for the growth. After the liberation, craftsmanship continued evolving and turned into an industry. Today Vratsa acts as a major industrial center.

Evidence of many historic periods has been preserved there. The...

Gabrovo is a beautiful town located in central Bulgaria. The town is situated on the northern slope of Stara Planina Mountain.

Little is known about the town’s history. According to the legends, its founder is a craftsman called Racho Kovacha (the blacksmith). He settled in the region and built his shop in the shade of a hornbeam tree (gabur in Bulgarian). This is how the name of the town originated. Racho’s skills attracted other craftsmen, who decided to settle nearby. The town turned into a major center where craftsmen practiced their skills in 26 distinct spheres.

One of the most well-known characteristics of the town is the sense of humor of locals. Many books have been written on the topic. Gabrovo citizens established their one of a kind humor museum. If you visit the town, make sure you are taken to the museum, since it might be unique site on a...

One of Bulgaria’s biggest wine production centers is situated in central north Bulgaria, in the region between the Danube Valley and Stara Planina Mountain. The name of the town is Souhindol and its residents call it the Bulgarian Champagne Region. Most of the people living in the area are involved in grape growing and wine production.

The town is somehow distanced from main roads, which makes it even more attractive for those willing to experience the charm of small and peaceful Bulgarian settlements.

Souhindol’s history dates way back in time. A settlement existed in the area during the Neolithic period. Historians believe that a Roman settlement existed there and wine production started taking place. A plate depicting Dionysus was discovered in the area.

The first written evidence of the settlement’s existence dates back to the 15th century,...

One Bulgarian small and little known town that has intriguing and long history is situated 25 km away from Preslav, 103 km away from Bourgas and slightly over 360 km away from the capital of Sofia.

Smiadovo is comfortably hidden in the folds of eastern Stara Planina Mountain. Archaeological discoveries from the region prove the theory that Smiadovo existed long time ago. Researchers have discovered nine mounds, which serve as evidence that the settlement was a residential center back in the 4th and 5th centuries BC.

A major road passed through the region and the settlement probably appeared near it.

Ottoman registers mention Smiadovo as far back as in 1573.

Several legends explain the origin of Smiadovo’s name. During the Ottoman reign, the husband of the beautiful Smiada was killed. Devastated by his death, Smiada decided to relocate together with her sons. She...

Only 19 km away from the city of Plovdiv, you will find the town that is probably most popular for its wedding dress production. This town is Asenovgrad.

It is worth paying a visit to Asenovgrad, even if you lack intentions to purchase a wedding dress.

The settlement appeared in the 7th century and carried the Greek name Stenimahos. Some believe that the Greek root of the word means that the settlement formed after fierce battles. Other versions focus on the location of the town in the gorge of Chaia River.

One of the most important roads to Greece passes through the municipality.

Since its creation, Asenovgrad has seen strong Greek influence. Until the beginning of the 20th century, Stanimahos was a mainly Greek town having 9000 residents. As a result, the town refrained from taking active participation in the Bulgarian liberation struggles.

Asenovgrad was freed from...

The town of Chepelare is the home of one of Bulgaria’s unique museums. It has been named Museum of the Rhodope Karst and is situated on the ground floor of Peshterniak hotel.

Reaching the museum is relatively easy and even if you fail following the signs, local people will be glad to show you the direction. If you are traveling towards Pamporovo, enter Chepelare and head to the second bridge. You need to turn there, crossing the main Chepelare street. A second left turn will follow immediately and you will see the hotel. Peshterniak hotel resembles a typical Alpine hut.

The Museum of the Rhodope Karst is unique for both Bulgaria and the Balkans. Most of the exhibits were discovered in the Rhodope Mountains and have been displayed since 1980. It provokes the imagination of visitors, getting them acquainted with unusual artifacts, little known facts and the history of...

Karlovo is situated in central Bulgaria, in the northern part of the Karlovo valley. The town is situated 123 km away from Sofia and 55 km away from Plovdiv in the foot of Stara Planina Mountain.

According to historic evidence, Thracians populated that territory in ancient times. A road connected the Black Sea region to Serdika and passed through the region of present-day Karlovo. Many fortresses provided security and some remains can still be seen near Karlovo today.

Several settlements and fortresses existed on the territory of the contemporary town. In the 15th century, the Ottoman ruler gave the village of Soushenitsa to the commander Karlu Ali Bei. He probably gave Karlovo its name. The oldest landmark in the town, the mosque of Kourshoum, dates back to this period.

During the revival period, Karlovo turned into a craftsmen center. Locals practiced more than 30 crafts...

Numerous characteristics can be used to describe Bansko. Number one in the list undoubtedly is the excellent winter sports conditions. Jews form one of the oldest communities part of Bulgaria’s resident makeup. Historic evidence mentions the presence of Jewish communities during the reign of Roman emperor Caligula (37-41AD), a few decades before the Sack of Jerusalem. Later, the Balkans became the destination of various Jewish migratory waves. The latest and largest wave took place at the end of the 15th century. It resulted from the banishment of the Jewish communities from Spain.

The present-day Central Synagogue in Sofia is part of the Sephardic tradition. The Jewish community of Sofia commissioned its construction in the 1900s to an Austrian architect working at the time in Bulgaria. The architectural style resembles that of old synagogues in Spain. However, their look is reflected through the then-contemporary style of Viennese Secession.

Construction of the Central Synagogue ended in 1909. The...

Sahat Tepe is one of the lower Plovdiv hills (46 m). Yet, its central location reveal pleasant view of Plovdiv’s main street and the old part of town. The hill is just a few steps to the west of the main street. Some houses and cobblestone streets appear in its lower part. A couple of alleys and steps continue upwards through rocks and forest.

Sahat Tepe has a south and a north peak. The saddle between the two has been turned into a recreational area. In the evening, young people preferring to meet in the open air rather than in pubs and clubs gather there. A radio and television tower built in the 50s stands on the south peak. An old Ottoman clock tower still stands on the north peak. The tower was once visible from most Plovdiv parts, but is today obscured by the higher trees.

Kapana neighborhood in the city of Plovdiv is quite unusual. No other similar city landscape can be seen in Bulgaria today.

The magic of Kapana (this name means ‘the trap’ in Bulgarian) comes from the multitude of streets that cross at various angles. Inbetween any two streets you will see small space, barely sufficient for the construction of a house or two

Buildings feature Viennese style that became very fashionable in Bulgaria in the beginning of 20th century. The ground floors of almost all buildings house little shops. Kapana’s northern part houses most of Plovdiv's bars and nightclubs.

The southern part is quieter, having usual Bulgarian shops and cafés that satisfy the needs of the local residents. However, commerce in Kapana has traditions dating way back in time. The names of the streets, translating as Ironsmith's,...

One of Plovdiv’s hills, Bounardzhik has surprisingly gained international fame. A favorite song in Russia recounts about a soviet soldier of stone standing on top of a mountain in far off Bulgaria. His name is Aliosha. In snow and rainstorms Aliosha remembers the leaden storm of the war and all fallen young men, who unlike him remain unknown. The Bulgarian mountain is Bounardzhik.

Bounardzhik stands just 108 m tall and is the second highest Plovdiv hill. Even today you will see the stone figure of Aliosha standing there. It can be seen practically from any point in Plovdiv. Aliosha’s monument appeared in the 50s to commemorate the courage for all soviet soldiers that had fallen during various European battles.

Aliosha is a Russian nickname used to address people named Alexei. The monument quickly gained this name, which became increasingly popular when...

One of the biggest towns in Bulgaria is called Stara Zagora. It is situated in the so called geographical center of the country, 220 km away from Sofia. Apart from being a beautiful town, Stara Zagora is ancient. Remains from Neolithic dwellings have been found there.

In ancient times, the settlement was important center and carried the name of the roman emperor Trajan. During the middle ages, it preserved its power and developed into a commercial town.

Stara Zagora is now a contemporary town that acts as a culture and education center. It was named ‘the linden town’ because of the many trees. It is also known as the town of straight streets. The central part of town was destroyed in a 19th century fire after which the streets were reconstructed and positioned in a straight manner.

If you are looking for something unique to explore in Bulgaria, you might consider heading to the town of Asenovgrad where you will discover a one of a kind museum. Some of the artifacts exhibited there are matchless on a global scale and will give you more information about the beautiful Bulgarian nature and the past of the territory.

Asenovgrad’s paleontology museum was founded in 1990 as a subsidiary to the National Museum of Natural History in Sofia. Most of the collection was created due to the efforts of a single man named Dimitur Kovachev.

Kovachev worked for many years as biology teacher in the Asenovgrad high school. He decided to get his 9th grade students excited about science. Together, they began searching for paleontological remains and bringing piece by piece a vast collection into existence.

The museum is readily accessible. When you reach...

Various historic developments took place in the town of Pleven. Situated 160 km away from Sofia in central northern Bulgaria, Pleven has its thousands of years of history. Many artifacts, connected to past events, are exposed in the town’s history museum.

In 1924, people accidentally found in a vineyard close to the Pleven village of Vulchitrun the largest Thracian gold treasure ever discovered in the country. All items weight 12 kg and can be seen in the National Archaeology Museum in Sofia.

Pleven is largely connected to Bulgaria’s attempts to gain independence and end the Ottoman rule over its territories.

The town also played role in the Russo-Turkish war. Troops of both armies clashed in the region. Nearly five months were needed for the Russian troops to defeat the army of Osman Pasha on December 10 1877.

Samovodska Charshia (Samovod marketplace) is situated in the very heart of Veliko Turnovo and still preserves the spirit and traditions of the Bulgarian revival period. The market appeared during the second half of the 19th century when Turnovo started expanding. The town’s small cobblestone streets turned into Turnovo’s center. On Fridays, residents of the nearby villages came to Turnovo to present and sell their production. They started opening small shops and moving their activities to the town.

Today, the ethnographic complex has turned into one of Veliko Turnovo’s biggest tourism landmarks. Samovodska Charshia will take you back in time with its narrow streets and small shops.

One of Rousse’s most notable architecture landmarks is its Profit-Yielding Building. This Rousse symbol is located in the central part of the city, at Svoboda square. The name of the building is derived from an idea to turn the construction into a profit-producing structure. Profit was to be generated through shop, theater, casino and library rental.

In 1896, Rousse’s municipal council decided to start the construction of a theater building in the central part of the city. The building was to meet the cultural needs of Rousse residents and to generate some rent revenue.

Construction began in 1898 following the plan of Viennese architects. The process was slow due to the lack of funding. In 1900 work stopped though the construction of the theater chamber was still not finalized. The first play was staged in the casino in 1901. Work on the building ended in...

One of the most magnificent buildings in Bulgaria’s Veliko Turnovo is Rozhdestvo Bogorodichno cathedral. The cathedral stands high on a small square in the old part of town. Famous Bulgarian constructor Kolio Ficheto worked on the cathedral from 1842 to 1844. All funds for the construction were donated.

The elliptical windows are probably the most beautiful part of the cathedral. Apart from the impressive exterior architecture, the church features unique interior. The vaults are constructed of bricks and mortar. Two lines of capitals bring symmetry to the interior.

Apart from the main entrance, the Turnovo cathedral has two other entrances positioned symmetrically on both sides.

The church lacks a bell tower. A tower rises 30 m away from it.

Veliko Turnovo’s cathedral has interesting history. A mass was held there after the arrival of Russian troops in...

Most people fail recognizing the town of Omourtag as a popular tourism destination. It is located 26 km away from Turgovishte, 66 km away from Shoumen and 78 km away from Veliko Turnovo. Although it is located in the beautiful eastern fore part of Stara Planina Mountain Omourtag remains generally unknown.

The earliest signs of settlers in the area date back to the 6th century BC. Later, during the reign of the Byzantine emperor Justinian, the region became part of a larger fortified area.

The first written evidence concerning the appearance of the town appeared in an Ottoman register where Omourtag was mentioned as Kaza Osman Pazar. The evidence dates back to the 17th century. During the revival period, the town was blooming. That is when it became a trade center. The settlement was called Osman Pazar until 1934 when it was renamed after the Bulgarian khan Omourtag. Popovo is a town situated in northeastern Bulgaria, on both banks of Popovska River. The distance to Turgovishte is 36 km, to Rousse – 75 km and to Sofia – 300 km.

Locals are very proud of their town and the legend about its establishment, full of romanticism. According to the legend, Popovo was established by a priest who settled there with his numerous children. One winter, snow started falling too soon and a division of the Ottoman army was stranded in the area. The priest offered the soldiers shelter. When spring came, the sultan decided to find out how the priest managed to feed so many people. He was impressed with the priest’s diligence and allowed him to settle wherever he wanted. That was how Popovo came into existence.

Lovech is one of the most enchanting towns in Bulgaria. It is located in the north part of the Stara Planina Mountain region, on both shores of Osum River.

It initially sprung as a Thracian settlement that turned into a traveler’s center located on a major Roman road. During the Middle Ages, the Lovech fortress was used as a strategic fortification in northern Bulgaria. A three-month siege ended in a peace treaty between the Bulgarian rulers Asen and Petur and the Byzantine ruler. This treaty marks the establishment of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom.

During the revival period, Lovech acted as a craftsmen meeting point. Lovech merchants traveled throughout the empire and the town prospered. It was often called Altun (golden) Lovech. Near the village of Debelt, tourists can discover Deultum archaeology preserve. The village is situated 17 km away from the coastal city of Bourgas.

Deultum preserves evidence of ancient times. Over a period of 2000 years, the region housed one of the most important economical centers of southeastern Thrace.

Oldest evidence of a settlement in the area dates back to the late Bronze Age or the 13th to 12th centuries BC. According to historians, the name of the first settlement was Dovelt meaning place between two swamps.

During the reign of emperor Vespasian, the region turned into a Roman veterans colony. The proximity to the sea and the availability of important roads turned the settlement into an important trade center. Its name changed to Deultum.

In the 4th century, Deultum turned into the fourth most important settlement in Haemimont province. Its name changed once...

Ottoman ruler Sherif Khalil insisted on the construction of the sanctuary in 1740. Columns from Pliska were used in the construction.

The official name of the mosque is Sherif Khalil after its creator but most people know is as Tomboul (a word meaning rounded in Turkish). The name is derived from the shape of its dome.

If you really need to escape city noise and heat, just visit this place and you will be able to spend there days or even weeks of peaceful relaxation.

Alexander Stamboliyski dam is the first major dam to be constructed in Bulgaria. It was planned back in the 40s of the past century and construction took place in 1953. The dam was constructed over plots in the municipalities of Gabrovo and Veliko Turnovo. It starts three km west of the town of Sevlievo.

The length of the dam is 18 km and depending on the water level its depth varies from 30 to 35 m. An entire village had to disappear in order for dam construction to take place. Residents of the village of Bara were relocated to other villages of the region. Even today, when the water level is low, you can see the remains of buildings and the bell tower of the village church.

Fishermen love this place. The population of fish is...

The oldest architectural monument in Karlovo was constructed in 1485. Even today you can see the beautiful façade of Kourshoum mosque.

You will have difficulties discovering information about the landmark and its history. When visiting Karlovo, you will find the mosque in relatively poor state. Vandals have managed scribbling writings on the walls and the information plate has been damaged.

Despite the harm it has suffered, the mosque still impresses with its dimensions.

The local Ottoman ruler used materials from the destroyed St. Spas Monastery in the construction of the mosque. Evidence of this fact is still available today since the marble columns of the mosque carry Christian symbols. In 1946, the ruler devised the entire settlement surrounding the mosque for its maintenance.

Elena is considered one of the most beautiful Bulgarian towns. It is situated in the northern part of Bulgaria, on the bank of Elenska River. The town is situated 38 km away from Veliko Turnovo.

Much of Elena’s history is still unknown. Ancient remains have been found in the region, showing that it was probably populated in antiquity. The first data concerning the modern settlement appeared in 1430 when the town was known under the names Eliana and Strumena.

During the revival period, Elena turned into a craftsmen center. It was also a cultural center. Many Elena residents participated in Bulgaria’s liberation struggles.

Elena acted as the only major Bulgarian town that had three churches. Because of their history, the three churches enjoy strong visitor interest today.

If you walk seven km away from Sevlievo and three km away from the village of Riahovtsite, you will find one of the biggest Muslim sanctuaries in Bulgaria. Believers from all parts of Bulgaria gather at Teketo hill to honor the saint buried there.

According to a legend, the hill houses the grave of Gaazi Baba. Gaazi Baba was young and brave. People called him Gaazi, meaning hero. During a war, the young man was seriously wounded. On his way home, he fell off the horse to be found by a shepherd. The shepherd cured Gaazi Baba over long months. The Bulgarian and the Turkish men became friends and settled in Riahovtsite. There, they cured people regardless of religion. The two of them lived at Teketo, which later on became a sanctuary.

When Gaazi Baba died, people decided to construct a tomb. The tomb has octagonal form, typical for Muslim sanctuaries. In the middle of the tomb,...

The southern slope of Surnena Sredna Gora Mountain protects till present day one of Stara Zagora’s biggest treasures – Metodi Kousev or Aiazmoto park.

The park is the first European-style park to be set up in the country. Its history and the legends told are quite intriguing.

Until the beginning of the 19th century, a centuries-old forest existed in the region of the park. A healing spring flowed there. It was called the spring of St. Todor. According to a legend, the ruler of Stara Zagora has a daughter who got sick. He allowed Christian healers to take care of it. They took her to the spring and she was cured. Over the centuries, people came to the area to pray and find cure. During the Ottoman rule, Mahmud II sultan decided to destroy the forest and the healing spring. The region turned into an abandoned place.

In 1895, bishop Metodi Kousev decided to...

The biggest of its kind park in Bulgaria is situated 25 km away from Pleven, on the road to Sofia. General Lavrov Park is located near the road diversion to Gorni Dubnik village. This memorial park, just like Skobelev Park, was created at its current site for a reason. The place is a former military ground where a battle that was part of the Russo-Turkish war took place.

Right after Bulgaria’s liberation from Ottoman rule, the Russian government started erecting monuments in the region of Gorni Dubnik. A number of monuments, honoring all soldiers who took part or died in the battles were set up. Sculptures and an open-air exhibition of Russian weapons also became part of the memorial area. A park was created there from 1950 to 1954. In 1977, the park was entirely renovated and new monuments were positioned.

The park underwent additional renovation as part of a campaign...

The town of Etropole has given its name to a mountain region for a reason. Etropole hides in the northern folds of Stara Planina Mountain, 80 km away from Sofia and 15 km away from the town of Pravets.

Thracians settled in the region long time ago, according to historians in the 7th and 6th centuries BC. An important road passed there and connected the Danube to Thrace and Macedonia.

Etropole’s name is explained in several ways. Some believe that it originated from the Thracian Etropara meaning water town. Another theory connects the name to the old Bulgarian Untropole, meaning closed valley.

In the middle ages, the town developed as a center for the production of gold, silver, copper and iron. Many crafts made use of these natural resources.

Crafts and the proximity to major roads made Etropole grow. Locals had contacts with merchants from various parts of...

According to historians, the region was populated back in the Neolithic period. Findings uncovered in the area show that Snezhanka and Iubileina caves were populated long time ago. Thracians also settled in the area later on.

The settlement formed in the fourth century BC. Cohabitation between Thracians Bulgarians and Slavic tribes affected.

Peshtera received its name because of the numerous caves (peshtera is cave in Bulgarian) nearby.

One of the biggest architectural landmarks from the revival period in Gabrovo is the town’s clock tower.

The tower still stands in the center of Gabrovo, though it was constructed in 1835. It was set up to commemorate the construction of the first Bulgarian Western-style school.

Three separate sections make up the construction. The lowest part is square-shaped. An octagonal prism is positioned above it and the highest part ends in a dome. The tower is 27.7 m high, which makes it one of the tallest towers from the period.

Craftsmen who worked on it are unknown.

A legend describes the manner in which the construction permit was received. It was quite unusual for nations under Ottoman rule to receive permits for the construction of tall buildings. The chief craftsman talked to the Ottoman ruler and told him that the tower will be constructed in honor of Allah. In...

Tsarevets hill in the town of Veliko Turnovo was the main fortification of the old capital. Now it treasures the restored remains of the old fortress.

The fortress was built over the ruins of ancient settlements, the oldest one dating back to the 4th millennium BC. In the early middle ages, the region hosted the main town of the Roman district Lower Moesia. In the 9th century, the ruins were used as the foundation for the building of the Bulgarian fortress.

Today, visitors can see the remains of the upper town citadel, where the king’s palace was positioned. It had its throne hall, patriarchate and patriarch’s residence. An architecture museum is set on the hill. Well informed guides can walk you among the ruins and tell you more about Bulgarian history.

If you decide to stay in Veliko Turnovo over night, you could be lucky to enjoy the magnificent sound...

Sopot is a small town hiding in the Stryama River valley, 117 km away from Sofia and 55 km away from Plovdiv. It is situated close to Central Balkan National Park.

The region has been populated since ancient times. In 2005, archaeologists found treasure near the village of Dubene. Their evaluation shows that the findings are older than the city of Troy. The objects date back to the Bronze Age. The entire collection is made of gold and consists of 15 000 items.

Coins and Thracian artifacts have been found near Sopot. Other objects found have been connected to the time of Alexander the Great.

The contemporary settlement appeared in the 15th century. Historians believe that the name of Sopot is derived from an ancient Slavic or Bulgarian word meaning a water channel. Sopot indeed is rich in water and the town has many fountains.

During the revival period, Sopot turned into a...

The contemporary town of Veliki Preslav acts as administrative center of Preslav municipality. It is located in northeastern Bulgaria, 20 km away from the town of Shoumen and 25 km away from Tugovishte.

Veliki Preslav is situated in the folds of Preslavska Mountain, near Goliama Kamchia River. The town is relatively small, yet it keeps memories of glorious historic events.

According to evidence, Veliki Preslav appeared as a Thracian settlement. Remains from Thracian times have been found in the region. When Bulgarians settled in the area, Veliki Preslav’s population was mainly Slavic. In the middle of the 9th century, the town was fortified and turned into a strategic center.

Once Bulgarians accepted Christianity, Preslav saw the construction of many churches. It gained even more importance after Preslav was named the new Bulgarian capital. This development took...

The only place in Pleven that has preserved some of the revival-period architecture is the so called Revival Complex. It is situated in the central part of town, close to the old main street.

Despite the initial idea behind the complex, today it has nothing to do with museum collections. There, Pleven residents and town visitors can enjoy traditional Bulgarian cuisine in authentic surroundings. The place is worth paying a visit, even if only to have a rakia and a shopska salad.

Construction of the complex began in 1974. Buildings are exact replicas of old houses that were situated in other parts of town. The only authentic revival period house is the one that belonged to Angel Mruvkov. It inspired the creation of the entire complex.

Mruvkov’s house served as a museum where a lifestyle during the revival period collection was displayed. The upper floor of the house...

Chapel-mausoleum St. Georgi Pobedonosets is one of Pleven’s symbols and the sign on the town’s coat of arms.

The chapel is situated on Vyzrazhdane square, in the central part of town. It was constructed making use of the donations of patriotic Bulgarians members of the Tsar Osvoboditel Alexander II committee. Construction took place between 1903 and 1907.

Three sarcophaguses in the crypt of the chapel protect the remains of soldiers who died in the Pleven battle.

Some of the best Bulgarian architects, painters and sculptors from the beginning of the 20th century took part in the construction. Twelve architects competed to win the project and the winter was 27-year old Pencho Koichev.

The sculpture of St. George that stands at the chapel’s entrance features curious symbolism signifying the victory over the Ottoman Empire.

Triavna is a town hidden between Gabrovo and Veliko Turnovo. Road signs in Gabrovo and at Triavna’s exit show respectively 17 and 19 km but despite the difference, the distance between the two is approximately 20 km. The distance from Veliko Turnovo is 40 to 45 km if you manage to hit the correct road.

When you visit Triavna for the first time, especially if you head to it from a big urban area, you will certainly notice its peacefulness. Yet, activity in Triavna has never stopped and it is not frozen in time like other small Bulgarian settlements.

You will next notice how clean Triavna is. A long time before major cities started discussing recycling practices Triavna had already introduced separate waste collection.

If driving to Triavna, you can park your car behind the municipality. Its building has been entirely renovated and impresses with the new looks....

Hidden in the beautiful greenery of Pleven’s cascades is a unique building that town residents call The Bath. Since 25 years, this building protects unique works of art that Bulgarian artist Svetlin Rousev donated to his birth town.

Part of the collection was displayed in Sofia’s National Gallery for Foreign Art to commemorate 75 years since Rousev’s birth.

The building was constructed in 1905. Its specific architecture makes some people love it and others hate it. Because of its specifics, the building was called a Turkish-Roman Bath and until the 70s acted as such. Today, the building has been named a monument of culture of national importance.

Rousev has been collecting works of art throughout his life. In 1984, he decided to donate 322 of them to his birth town. These include Bulgarian works of art from the revival period until present times....

Danube River originates in Germany’s Black Forest and is the second longest river in Europe. Its length is 2859 km and Danube is the only river flowing from the west to the east.

The river is a major international water route that crosses nine European countries. One of these countries is Bulgaria. Nearly 5.2 percent of the river’s length is situated in the country. These nearly 480 km give excellent opportunities for tourism practices like cruises.

These types of trips have grown in popularity over the past few years. The number of passengers is constantly increasing.

Over 11 companies perform Danube cruises and five or six of these include Bulgaria as a destination to visit. One Bulgarian company has specialized in such trips.

Unfortunately, the Bulgarian part of the river lacks major landmarks and beautiful nature like the one in Hungary, Austria and...

Ask any Bourgas resident about the city’s biggest landmarks and you will be directed to the marine garden. This is the most romantic place in Bourgas, situated in the very heart of the city.

Construction of the garden began way back in 1910. A young garden expert from Varna named Georgi Douhtev decided to apply in the setting up of the park all of the knowledge he gathered during his studies.

Douhtev turned the empty space into one of Bulgaria’s most beautiful gardens. Thank to his love for exotic plant species, the park features various unusual plants. A quarter of the garden has been named a monument of gardening art.

You could start your walk following Bogoridi street. The first thing to strike you upon entry in the park is the breathtaking view from its terrace. The marine casino is situated nearby, though not functioning today.

If you are looking for the youngest Bulgarian town, head south of Sofia. After two hours, you will reach Blagoevgrad, the home of thousands of students. This population makes it one of the youngest and liveliest Bulgarian towns.

A relatively young town, set up on the remain of a Thracian settlement, Blagoevgrad has had many names through time- Duyma Badari, Dzhoumaia, Gorna Dzhoumaia and others. These names have Turkish origin and the majority of the town’s population during the Ottoman rule had Turkish background.

Blagoevgrad regained its independence in 1912. After the end of the Ottoman rule, Blagoevgrad was much behind other Bulgarian cities. Electricity reached the town only in the 30s of the 20th century. Since 1950, the settlement carries the name of Blagoevgrad after the politician Dimitar Blagoev.

Today Blagoevgrad is a modern town. Its center was...

Botevgrad is one of the small Bulgarian towns that you might miss while searching for other adventures and exotic tourism sites. The town is situated in the middle of the Botevgrad valley that locals usually call the trough, 60 km away from Sofia and 30 km away from the town of Etropole. Beautiful nature, medieval fortresses and several small villages in the region give options to fans of numerous tourism activities.

Historians date back the settlement to the 5th century BC when it was created by Thracians. A Roman road probably passed through the area. Later, the village was relocated to the mountain area and was named Zelin.

In the middle of the 18th century, the settlement was relocated once again to the valley and started carrying the name Samoundzhievo, probably because of a bakery in the region (an old Bulgarian word for bakery is samoundzhiynitsa.)

An Ottoman ruler...

Maritsa carried various names through the ages. The river has been known as Hebur, Hebros and Evros and is the biggest on the Balkans. It originates from the Gorno Marichensko Lake in Rila Mountain. In Turkey, the river flows into the Aegean Sea. Maritsa is the second biggest and the deepest river in Bulgaria

The entire length of the river is 524.6 km. It has nearly 100 major tributaries.

A number of ancient books, including the writings of Aristotle and Virgil mention Maritsa.

According to Bulgarian researchers, the river’s name has old Thracian origin and has been derived from a word meaning swamp, lake or big water.

A major flood occurred in 1858 and the water overflowed in Plovdiv's Kariashka and Marasha districts. Several other floods occurred and in 1937, stone safety tiling was set up.

For centuries Maritsa has played the role of a transport...

Kalofer is located 136 km away from Sofia and 55 km away from Plovdiv. The surrounding nature attracts many lovers of eco tourism and the town itself is a starting point of many mountain routes.

Little is known of the town’s history. It was founded in the 16th century.

According to a legend, a Bulgarian revolutionary leader named Kalifer and his band attacked passing Ottoman caravans. To deal with the issue, the sultan allowed revolutionaries to settle in the region, who on the other hand promised to stop the assaults.

One of the most preferred eco and rural tourism destinations in Bulgaria is situated 25 km away from the town of Troyan and 200 km away from Sofia.

Apriltsi is a town situated in a beautiful valley that is surrounded by Stara Planina Mountain from all sides. The town offers breathtaking view of Severen Dzhendem preserve and of Botev peak.

The appearance of ancient theaters in the distant past was tied to rituals connected to the tribute to Dionysus. These celebrations had Thracian origin but later on became popular in Greece. Initially these honored fertility and later on turned into theater performances.

Greek drama turned the theaters into really popular places. The mild climate allowed performances to take place in the open air.

Construction of new theaters became a necessity. According to a theory, the ancient theater in Plovdiv was constructed during Roman times. Its architecture proves this claim.

The theater is divided into three parts. Such facility was needed due to the importance of Plovdiv during the Hellenistic period. Apart from the beautiful architecture, its location was of great importance.

Old Plovdiv was destroyed several times and the ancient amphitheater was hidden beneath the ground...

Ariana lake is one of the best known spots in Sofia. Sofia residents, as well as visitors of the capital, select the location for walks and rest. Today, the lake and the nearby park have been restored and offer various leisure activities.

Construction of the facility began shortly after Bulgaria gained its independence and ended in 1904. A bridge connecting the alleys to a small island was set up at that time. Shortly after, the lake turned into one of the most liked places in Sofia.

During the summer, visitors can enjoy the coolness of the lake in a boat and the winter offers ice skating opportunities. In the 30s of the 20th century, the lake gained even more popularity since increasing number of people got involved in winter sports.

In the 60s and the 70s, Ariana became one of Sofia's symbols. Thousands of people gathered there, especially during weekends.

After the city of Plovdiv was conquered by Ottomans, its name changed to Filibe. The new name was derived from the ancient Filipopolis. During that period, two of the town’s churches were turned into mosques. The biggest Plovdiv mosque appeared over St. Petka church close to the Roman stadium.

The new sanctuary was named Dzhoumia mosque.

Architecture resembles the one of mosques in Sofia and other bigger cities. During the period, Ottomans were affected by Slavic and Byzantine art and architecture.

The mosque has elongated shape. It was named after Mourad, the ruler who ordered its construction.

Exact information about the years of construction is missing. According to a legend, the mosque was destroyed during leadership quarrels but was later on renovated.

Massive walls are made of stone and each stone is surrounded by bricks from all sides. This is an...

The house of Georgi Mavridi in Plovdiv, named after French poet Alphonse de Lamartine, was constructed in 1829 on the corner of three streets. Its positioning is unusual, leading to atypical architecture.

Today, the house stands in the old part of town, on its very top. Some interesting stories about Lamartine’s stay there are told, though it lasted only three days.

Lamartine became a poet later on life. Initially, he dealt with diplomacy. He became a student of the French academy in 1830. His views and strongly expressed political independence won Lamartine worldwide popularity.

The poet traveled to distant lands in 1833 and on his way back decided to rest in present-day Istanbul. A group of tartars traveled together with Lamartine and his wife. They always examined shelters and accommodation places before the group settled there.

Upon reaching Plovdiv,...

Bulgaria’s capital, the city of Sofia, is the biggest settlement in the country. Sofia is located in the western part of Bulgaria, in the vicinities of the picturesque Vitosha Mountain.

The location makes climate in Sofia slightly harsher than in the rest of the country. Summer heat is moderately intense but winters usually turn to be cold and snowy.

Sofia has rich history dating back in time. The settlement appeared in the 7th century BC. Thracians founded the town close to mineral springs. They named the town Serdika.

Once it became part of the Roman empire, many soldiers settled there and the city started changing its appearance. Following the Roman style it got a new fortress wall, the streets were paved, Serdika got a sewerage system, which provided residents with clean water from the nearby mountain.

In the end of the 3rd century BC, Serdika became a main...

Architecture and history preserve Varosha is situated in the town of Lovech. The complex includes the old part of town on the right bank of Osum River.

In 1969, the old Lovech district of Varosha was named a preserve. Nearly 200 monuments of history and archaeology can be seen there today. Beautiful revival houses constructed in the 70s of the 19th century dominate the landscape. Most of these houses have two floors and massive wooden gates. Small, cobblestone streets meander between the buildings, often ending in front of a gate or a fence.

Varosha has so many landmarks. One of the Lovech symbols, the covered bridge over Osum is a unique construction for the Balkan region. Data shows that it appeared in 1838. Nature destroyed it several times. In 1872, after yet another bridge devastation, Lovech residents asked craftsman Koliu Ficheto to construct a covered bridge having...

If you decide to visit Lovech, make sure to pay some attention to its ethnographic complex. The complex is situated in Varosha district, on a small cobblestone street. Two adjacent houses form the museum.

Drasova house was constructed in the first half of the 19th century. You will be amazed by the mixture of oriental and European styles you will discover in the house. The collection recreates the life of a wealthy family from the period. The mixture of styles can be spotted throughout the house. Apart from the typical kitchen furniture, you will notice a colorful Milka box brought from Austria.

A typical for the Balkan region stove has been preserved in the house.

The living room further displays the style mix. Colorful rugs cover the couch, placed right next to Viennese chairs and a Russian samovar.

One of the most visited landmarks in the town of Lovech is the museum dedicated to the work of revolutionary Vasil Levski.

The museum is situated in Varosha district, on 14 Marin Poploukanov street. It was founded in 1954 in the house of Levski’s brother-in-arms Loukan Lilov. Later, Lovech residents constructed a separate building and the collection was moved there in 1982.

Two floors preserve the exhibition items. The ground floor has been kept in its original state. Lovech brags the richest collection of Levski’s personal belongings. The museum displays Levski’s dagger and saber and his small press used for the printing of invoices. A copy of his personal notebook is one of the most interesting items in the museum. A small, picturesque Bulgarian town by the name of Malko Turnovo is situated five km away from the border between Bulgaria and Turkey. Its population of 3500 people makes Malko Turnovo the biggest settlement in the central part of Strandzha Mountain.

Malko Turnovo is situated 470 km away from Sofia and 76 km away from the coastal city of Bourgas.

According to historic evidence, the area was populated in the 4th- 3rd centuries BC. Ore deposits in the region were used during that period and further during the Roman period.

After 330, Strandzha became one of the biggest ore providers for the Roman empire. As a result, the settlement grew and developed ore production.

Sanctuaries, ancient buildings, tombs and fortresses discovered in the area give sufficient evidence of the region’s importance for the Thracians.

A major necropolis in the Bakuren Izvor region, near the village of Evrenozovo, holds an interesting Roman tomb.

The tomb was discovered in 2003 and dates back to the beginning of the 4th century AD.

The stone tomb has been placed in a mound and features semi-cylindrical vault arch and elaborate façade. A second landmark, created more than a millennium later can be seen nearby. Tombs featuring similar architecture are no more than five or six on the territory of Bulgaria.

Evrenozovo is situated 34 km away from Malko Turnovo. Its name stems from the word evren, meaning dragon. People believed that some of the ancient landmarks situated in the region were dragon dens and this is how the village got its name.

The Thracian sanctuary of Kamuka is situated 10 km away from Malko Turnovo in the direction of Tsarevo. It happens to be an interesting complex of rare stone formations that the Thracians used as a sacred place in the heart of Strandzha.

Solar circles have been carved into a high rock spot. These circles are connected to Apollo and the solar cult. As a result of this worship of the sun, such sanctuaries are often positioned in open air, sunny places.

Archaeologists believe that the sanctuary was used 2500 years before Christ for sunrise observations. Summer solstice rituals were performed there by the ancient Thracian tribes.

Apart from the circles, the place is impressive with the breathtaking view and the strange shape of rocks. One of them resembles a mushroom and has logically been named the Stone Mushroom. An opening has formed in its foundation and according to...

A rich Sevlievo resident and his son decided to set up a complex named Dandolovi houses. Its unique architecture gives clear view of the revival period lifestyle in the town. The three houses were constructed as to have separate gates and separate yard entrances.

The complex underwent renovation in 1973 and now preserves the ethnographic past of the town.

Once you cross the big wooden gate, you are to submerge yourself in the revival time ambience. The yard still has its flower beds and a place where the family used to sit together during the summer. Sliven is one of the towns that contributed significantly to the cultural and historic development of Bulgaria. It is situated in the central part of the country and its name probably comes from the merger (slivane) of three local rivers and the well-known Sliven winds.

The town dates back to ancient times. It developed through the centuries as a rich craftsmen and culture center. In the beginning of the 19th century, during the Russo-Turkish war, Sliven was liberated for a short period of time. When Russian soldiers left the town in 1828, nearly half of the Sliven residents relocated as well.

Sliven is known for many developments but undoubtedly the most important one was the opening of a manufacture line in the 30s of the 19th century. Dobri Zheliazkov opened the first textile factory in the Ottoman empire and soon started supplying the sultan with clothing.

The town of Aitos is situated on the banks of Aitoska River. Aitos is situated 30 km away from Bourgas and 358 km away from Sofia. Nearly 25 000 people live in Aitos and 35 547 live in the town and the 17 other settlements in the municipality.

Winter in Aitos is mild and the summer is hot. The northern parts of the municipality are situated on the southern slopes of Aitos Mountain.

Ancient remains uncovered in the region signify that the town was a Thracian settlement in the distant past.

The remains of three towers are situated northwest of Aitos. These are probably the remains of a medieval fortification.

In 1206, Aitos was completely destroyed by Crusaders but saw revival in 1488.

Throughout time, the town received several names. Aetos, Astos and Idos are some of them, together with Orlovets and Orlovo. After the liberation, Aitos turned into an agriculture center...

Once upon a time, three giant brothers protected weak people. They fought Ottomans and were so powerful that rocks trembled beneath their feet.

The brothers fought each day and went back home to rest at night. To hide, they turned into rocks. Until present day, the three giant rocks stand near the town of Aitos and protect its residents.

This is one of the legends that Bulgarians created long ago to explain the appearance of the rock phenomenon Trite Bratia (the three brothers). The rocks are situated at an altitude of 200 m and have turned into a symbol of Aitos.

To reach them, you need to go north of the city and to enter Slaveeva Reka park.

Since 1972, the formations have the status of nature landmark. Together with nearby areas, the phenomenon has been included in the potentially protected Bulgarian areas.

As people say, each legend holds pieces of truth. Probably...

Hidden in the Karnobat valley, nearly 50 km away from the city of Bourgas, is the town of Karnobat. The municipality’s territory is only 806 sq m and its population is 28 843 people, 19 401 of which live in the town itself.

Karnobat has witnessed many historic events. The fortress of Markeli is situated seven km away from the town and was the site of one of the most important struggles between Bulgarians and Byzantines. Many battles took place there in the 8th and 9th centuries. Han Kroum turned the fortress into one of the most important fortifications south of Stara Planina.

Since the 15th century, the town acted as an administrative and commerce center. During the revival, it turned into a center of culture and enlightenment. Karnobat residents took active part in the struggle for religious independence.

Slaveeva Reka park is one of the favorite leisure spots of Aitos residents and town visitors. The name stems from the fact that many nightingales (slavei in Bulgarian) inhabit the beautiful area.

The area of the park is 1337 decares, 422 of which covered in dense forests. The rest is agricultural land. Trite Bratia protected area and Genger region are part of the park.

Slaveeva Reka is the place that offers rest in peaceful surroundings. The park also houses Genger ethnographic complex. Aitos residents call the place small Etur and its tiny cobblestone streets are lined with numerous traditional workshops. There, visitors can taste fine wine or drink aromatic coffee in the small café.

Once you take a look at the crafts alley, you can continue the walk in the park. If you happen to like climbing, the park features an artificial wall at your disposal. A shooting...

Though St. Dimtur Solounski church is situated in the center of Aitos, it takes visitors to another peaceful and quiet world.

The church was constructed in 1844 over the remains of St. Velikomuchenik Dimitri church that was destroyed in 1828. It was burned down during Bulgarian liberation struggles and constructed once again in 1883.

Crafstman Gencho from Zheravna was responsible for the construction and Ivan from Debur created the interior decorations.

St. Dimitur Solounski is a small church that features rich decorations, intricate woodcarvings and beautiful icons.

The bell tower was constructed by Deniu Danchev and bells were ordered from Russia in 1914. The small bell was used to announce the beginning and the end of the workday. The big one marked major religious holidays. The sound of both bells can still be heard today.

A small chapel was built near the church in...

The museum is situated in Dimitur Polianov’s memorial house. This building is the only preserved authentic revival-period construction in Karnobat.

Three halls display the museum collections. They present Karnobat culture and lifestyle from the revival period to the first decades of the 20th century.

Many photos and documents describe Karnobat as an important administrative, commercial and craftsmen center.

The collections present information about the Karnobat fair, which was one of the established such events alongside the fairs in Sliven, Kazanluk and Stara Zagora. Merchants from Turkey, Greece, Persia and Asia Minor visited Karnobat to offer their products for sale.

Karnobat’s spiritual center is St. Ioan Bogoslov church. Its construction began after Bulgaria’s liberation and was finalized in 1880. The church opened doors on May 8 1881.

Architecture is unique and according to documents, Gencho Kunev is the builder responsible for it. The dome underwent renovation in 1907 and the building was painted in 1909. No wall paintings decorate the church. It is unknown when a layer of paint was placed over them.

The church underwent major renovation in 1925.

A revival-period construction in Kotel houses Galatansko school and has been named an architecture monument today.

The building was constructed in 1869 in the typical for Kotel revival architectural style. The school was situated in Galata district that suffered no damage during a major fire in 1894 that destroyed most of the town.

Today, the two-level house has become the home of a unique cloth and carpet collection. Visitors can examine some of the most colorful carpets and blankets ever made. The collection presents the evolution of coloring patterns throughout time. Some of the exhibited works have the impressive age of 150 to 200 years, yet all colors have remained vivid and sharp. Kotel carpets feature typical bright colors and geometrical shapes.

Kotel is a beautiful small town in the eastern part of Stara Planina Mountain. It hides in a valley surrounded by steep cliffs. Many caves can be explored in the region.

The town is situated 50 km away from Sliven on the road to the villages of Ichera and Gradets. A second road that is nearly 18 km longer also leads there.

According to historians, Kotel is a relatively young town that appeared in the beginning of the Ottoman rule, or the 14th and 15th centuries. Refugees from destroyed settlements moved there. Kotel’s vicinities were populated since ancient time, as archaeological findings show.

Throughout time, Kotel became wealthier since its residents developed crafts. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the town turned into important cultural and economic center. Local craftsmen benefited from some privileges since they were responsible for the provision of goods...

Culture, education, architecture and construction developed in the town of Sevlievo when it saw economic growth in the end of the 17th century. Ottoman authorities showed interest in regulating crafts and developments in Bulgaria.

Ottomans coordinated the construction of clock towers in the country. The tower in Sevlievo was probably constructed in 1777, a date carved in Arabic numbers on the entrance of the edifice. The bell features other numbers, showing it was made two years earlier.

The main tower is higher than the others, made of stone and having thickness of 70 cm. Ropes connected to weights move the clock mechanism inside.

A copper dome covers the clock. It is situated in the middle of the construction, in a chamber of octagonal shape. The clock mechanism is made of iron. Wall openings allow the free movement of air.

The region where the town of Gorna Oriahovitsa is situated today has been populated in the distant past. Gorna Oriahovitsa is situated in northern Bulgaria, few kilometers away from Arbanasi and very near Veliko Turnovo.

A settlement was created in the area in the fifth millennium BC. Archaeologists found utensils and richly decorated pottery showing that ancient people were involved in agriculture and breeding.

A Thracian tribe settled in the area later on. Thracians created a sanctuary in the region of Kovanchoukourou (bee place). A monastery church is situated there now.

Silver coins show that Alexander the Great visited the region in the fourth century BC. In the first century BC, a settlement appeared where the Thracian village was situated. People living there started growing grapes and producing wine.

Toutrakan is one of the oldest and most intriguing Danube River towns in Bulgaria. It is situated midway between Rousse and Silistra, nearly 60 km away from each of the towns.

The town’s buildings are arranged amphitheatrically on a hill that reaches the Danube bank. Toutrakan faces the Danube. People in the region have long developed fishing and sailing, in connection to the proximity of the river.

Archaeological finds show that the region was populated in ancient times. During Roman times, a fortress was constructed. It carried the name Transmariska meaning beyond the swamps, a name also related to the nearby river.

Settlers from Asia Minor were the first to inhabit the region. The settlement initially acted as a military enforcement that protected the Roman border along the Danube. It kept this function until the 7th century.

One of the oldest cities in Europe is named Plovdiv. Historians believe that its age is similar to that of Troy and Plovdiv is older than Athens and Rome.

Plovdiv is situated in the central part of Bulgaria, almost 30 km away from the foot of the Rhodope Mountains. Its location determines Plovdiv’s specific climate. The summer heat is intense and the winter is almost entirely snowless.

Thracians were the first to settle in the region between the three hills. They called the city Evmolpia. In the 4th century BC, Philip of Macedonia conquered the city and built a wall around it. The name changed to Philipopolis. Thracians managed to regain the territory after the death of his son.

The town of Petrich is situated in the furthermost southwestern part of Bulgaria, in the foot of Belasitsa Mountain. This is the point, where the borders of Bulgaria, Greece and Macedonia meet.

Petrich is an old town and just like many others in Bulgaria; it has been set up over the remains of an ancient Thracian fortress. The fortress named Petra gave the town its current name.

A number of sites should be seen if you decide to visit the region. The town’s history museum, the church Sveta Bogoroditsa constructed in 1857, Belasitsa Mountain and the famous region of Roupite all feature among the must-sees.

Roupite has become famous for several reasons. Bulgaria’s world-famed prophet, named Vanga, lived there and delivered from Roupite her prophecies, both optimistic and dark. She asked for the construction of a church and it is there today to remind people...

The town of Pernik is situated nearly 30 km away from the capital of Sofia. In the past, the spot housed a major settlement. Throughout time, it experienced upsurges and downfalls. Its best times occurred in the 11th century under the rule of Krakra Pernishki. The boyar and his brave warriors aided tsar Samuil in his battle against the Byzantine emperor Vassilius II.

After this dynamic period, the town experienced decline and gradually turned into the home place of farmers and stock breeders. Few years after Bulgaria gained its independence, the first state coal mine opened there. Over a short period of time, people from various parts of the country resettled there. Pernik became a lively town and began growing. To house all the workers, the town grew and got some new residential districts. After the coal mine opened, Bulgaria’s first electricity power plant started...

Panagyurishiste is one of the Bulgarian towns that have been strongly connected to historic developments in the country.

Tourists connect the town to its golden treasure, dating back to the 4th and 3rd centuries BC. The treasure was discovered on December 8 1949 by brothers Pavel, Petko and Mihail Deikovi.

Historic events that took place in the town include the April uprising and the first steps that Bulgarians undertook to end Ottoman domination over the region.

Panagyurishiste is a small town, located in the southern part of Sredna Gora Mountain. The town is situated only 90km east of Sofia. A walk to the town can be combined with a visit to Pazardzhik, located 42 km away.

The town was set up as a Thracian settlement. The Panagyurishiste treasure stands as proof of this claim. A mound near the town, named Mramor, also confirms the theory. A Thracian leader from the 4th...

Bulgaria’s town of wine also happens to be the smallest in the country.

Melnik’s population reaches only 230 people. The houses hide in a mountainous area and carry the authentic feel of the traditional Bulgarian constructions.

The town is located in southern Bulgaria, close to Sandanski and Blagoevgrad. It is situated on the territory of southwestern Pirin Mountain.

Impressive sand towers surround Melnik. Some of the towers have been used to create wine cellars for the famous drink produced in the town.

Apart from wine lovers, Melnik appeals to those interested in history and Bulgaria’s revival period.

Melnik’s history museum is hosted in the Pashova house. The artifacts tell more about the crafts and wine production in the region.

Kiustendil is located in the fertile lands of western Bulgaria. The town’s history dates back to the 5th century BC, making it one of the oldest settlements in Bulgaria. Thracians settled there, attracted by the numerous mineral water springs.

Over the centuries, the town developed as a commerce and balneological center. It had many names among which Pautalia, Velbudzh and Kiustendil.

Today Kiustendil is known as the town of artists, as well as the fruit orchard of Bulgaria. Some of the finest cherries in the country are produced there.

Kiustendil is an attractive spa tourism destination. The waters of more than 40 springs have become famous for their healing powers. The region has several nice hotels that offer treatment in cozy surroundings.

The town of Kozloduy is located on the riverbank of Danube, to the north of the town of Vratsa. Its history dates a long way back but the town is well-known for two events. The historic revolutionary ship of Radetski reached Bulgaria through this port. Kozloduy is the place where Hristo Botev’s troops first stepped on Bulgarian land. A second important event took place in the 70s of the 20th century. The first and only functioning nuclear power plant in Bulgaria was constructed there.

Kozloduy lacks numerous tourism opportunities. Yet, if you decide to visit the town, take a walk to the national museum Radetski. The ship museum is an exact replica of the revolutionary vessel, which was unfortunately destroyed in a fire. It offers accommodation, giving you a chance to examine Bulgarian history and at the same time to rest peacefully near the river.

Koprivshtitsa is found in the valley of Topolchitsa River, in the middle of Sredna Gora. Many legends have been told about the creation of the town. According to one, the town was found at a crossing, where the roads from Zlatitsa, Pirdop and Klisoura to Strelcha and Panaguyrishte met.

The spot was covered by green meadows and the nearby river made them fertile. Travelers and shepherds often stopped there. One old Bulgarian family decided to settle in the area. This led to the creation of Koprivshtitsa. Each family that settled there got a nickname based on occupation. These nicknames were used to name Koprivshtitsa’s neighborhoods.

Another legend tells that the town was the creation of a Rila boyar. The boyar settled in the region, where herd could graze. She liked the place and decided to ask the sultan to make her ruler. The sultan gave her official document that...

If you decide to visit Kazanluk, set aside at least one day. This region hosts many sites that must be seen.

Since ancient times, the Kazanluk valley has been populated. The stay of the Thracians there had greatest importance. Nearly 1500 mounds remain as proof of their reign over the region. You can logically conclude that the region is paradise for treasure hunters, which however have failed taking away all of the Thracian treasures. Near Kazanluk, you can see several archaeological monuments, some of them discovered few years ago.

The Kazanluk Thracian tomb is undoubtedly the most interesting among these ancient finds. The tomb is open for visitors and happens to be very close to the city. It is also the first Bulgarian site included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The original tomb has been sealed but an exact replica that is open for tourists was set up.

Kazanluk has...

The town of Kurdzhali is situated in the eastern part of the Rhodope Mountains. Little is known of its history but according to scientists it appeared as a settlers’ town. Turkish immigrants decided to live there after their conquest over Bulgarian lands.

Kurdzhali’s name probably came from the name of the Turkish warrior Kyrdzha Ali, who got the admiration and support of people. His followers established the settlement around the grave of the respected leader.

Today Kyrdzhali has mixed population, which has led to some ethnic tension in the region.

The region has rich heritage and various sites to show to tourists. The sanctuaries of Tatoul and Perperikon are located in this area. Perperikon is the biggest megalith complex found until present and its discovery turned into scientific event on global scale.

Perperikon is located on a hill that is also...

The fertile lands of southeastern Bulgaria, near the shore of Toundzha River, house the beautiful town of Yambol. Its history is ancient and according to data, Yambol was found in the 3rd century by Emperor Diocletian.

Diocletian, who traveled in the region, was impressed by the beauty of nature. He created a settlement named Diospolis, or the town of god. Through time, the name of the town changed several times until it became Yambol.

During the Ottoman rule, Yambol developed into a big commerce and agriculture center. Today it still has one monument from that period. Bezistena represents a huge covered market.

Apart from Bezistena, Yambol has several other interesting landmarks. The history museum houses nearly 100 000 items, collected over the past 100 years. Volunteers and various archaeological organizations gathered these items. Yambol’s art gallery also has a...

The town of Dobrich is located in northeastern Bulgaria, 50 km away from Varna and 480 km away from Sofia. Dobrich and the region near the town have been called Bulgaria’s granary because of the fertile land and the wheat production taking place there.

Contemporary Dobrich exists on the remains of Thracian, Roman and old Bulgarian settlements. It was founded in the 15th or 16th century by the rich merchant Hadzhioglou from Pazardzhik.

Initially the town carried his name. A change came in the end of the 19th century. During the centuries, the settlement developed as a trade and commerce center. It had a huge fair and many shops.

The oriental looks of the town started changing in the 19th century. It got its church, school and hospital. During the same period, many refugees from the Kotlen and Turgovishte regions moved to Dobrich. This movement added to the diverse...
