Bulgarian wines today compete with well-known French, Italian, Chilean and Californian wines. Some local cellars have gained international awards. Some types of grapes used in the production are specifically Bulgarian.

People in the country generally like wine. Almost all traditional celebrations include a glass of wine, especially during the winter. Locals prefer Bulgarian wines and rarely buy foreign brands.

The country has over 100 functioning wineries. A territorial division will separate the country in five wine regions. These include the Danube River valley, the Black Sea coastal region, Strouma River valley, Thracian valley and the rose valley.
