								One of the biggest towns in Bulgaria is called Stara Zagora. It is situated in the so called geographical center of the country, 220 km away from Sofia. Apart from being a beautiful town, Stara Zagora is ancient. Remains from Neolithic dwellings have been found there.

In ancient times, the settlement was important center and carried the name of the roman emperor Trajan. During the middle ages, it preserved its power and developed into a commercial town. 

Stara Zagora is now a contemporary town that acts as a culture and education center. It was named &amp;lsquo;the linden town&amp;rsquo; because of the many trees. It is also known as the town of straight streets. The central part of town was destroyed in a 19th century fire after which the streets were reconstructed and positioned in a straight manner.

								If you decide to visit the Bulgarian town of &amp;lsquo;straight streets&amp;rsquo; and are interested in history, you will probably enjoy exploring the Stara Zagora history museum.

The museum&amp;rsquo;s history started back in 1907. Stara Zagora&amp;rsquo;s archaeology union decided to create a museum protecting artifacts connected to the town&amp;rsquo;s history. The collection was initially placed in a schoolroom. In 1912, a new building was constructed to house the town library and the history museum. The museum officially opened doors in 1949.

Stara Zagora&amp;rsquo;s museum preserves over 170 000 exhibition items, 86 000 of which can be explored by visitors. The overall area of the building is 1290 sq m and collections are displayed on four levels.

								The southern slope of Surnena Sredna Gora Mountain protects till present day one of Stara Zagora&amp;rsquo;s biggest treasures &amp;ndash; Metodi Kousev or Aiazmoto park.

The park is the first European-style park to be set up in the country. Its history and the legends told are quite intriguing.

Until the beginning of the 19th century, a centuries-old forest existed in the region of the park. A healing spring flowed there. It was called the spring of St. Todor. According to a legend, the ruler of Stara Zagora has a daughter who got sick. He allowed Christian healers to take care of it. They took her to the spring and she was cured. Over the centuries, people came to the area to pray and find cure. During the Ottoman rule, Mahmud II sultan decided to destroy the forest and the healing spring.
