One of the richest archaeology museums in Bulgaria is situated in Nessebar. The exposition was presented in 1994 and the museum is situated on 2A Mesambria street, in the old part of town.

According to evidence, Veliki Preslav existed initially as a Thracian settlement but its name is unknown. In the dawn of the Bulgarian state, mainly Slavic tribes lived in the region. This probably gave Veliki Preslav its name.

In the middle of the 9th century, the town was fortified and turned into a military and strategic center.

After Bulgarians accepted Christianity, Preslav saw the construction of many churches. The city gained even more importance when it became Bulgarian capital in 893. To cut away the pagan past, tsar Simeon decided to move the capital from Pliska to Preslav.

Preslav’s museum protects a rich collection of artifacts, among which the Preslav gold treasure, a ceramic icon and the biggest lead seals collection in the world. Remains of several buildings like the Preslav palace, churches, a monastery and a basilica can be seen there.

The town of Pliska was the first Bulgarian capital, established right after the country’s foundation in 681. It acted as a political center and functioned as a cultural and economic capital. Pliska maintained its function until the capital was moved to Veliki Preslav in 893.

Archaeologists and historians believe that the town was constructed over an old Slavic settlement. The remains of the ancient Pliska tell a lot about Bulgaria and its past developments. Ruins show that the capital covered an area of 23 sq km.

Since it was constructed in a valley and lacked natural defense, Pliska had three fortification systems. A big ditch surrounded the city. The second defense line represented a thick wall. Another wall protected the city from inside.

The big basilica, situated in the outer city, is the biggest on the Balkans. The dimensions of 100 by 30 m make it one of the...

Rozhdestvo Hristovo church in the town of Shipka is part of the complex known as Shipchenski monastery. The complex includes the church, living premises and an ecclesiastical school.

The complex is situated in the foot of St. Nikola peak, where Bulgarian and Russian soldiers fought for independence in 1877 and 1878.

Church construction took place between 1882 and 1902. The mother of general Skobelev, Olga Skobeleva, gave the idea for the complex construction. She organized a committee that managed the entire process.

Russian architects planned the church and it displays the typical 17th century Russian style. The church has three altars and golden domes. The bell tower houses 17 bells.

The church is open for visits each day from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm.

 Neolithic Dwellings Museum
The Neolithic Dwellings Museum of Stara Zagora presents the two best preserved such dwellings in Europe. They date back to the 6th millennium BC.

Archaeologists believe that the village, where the dwellings were situated, was burned down. As a result, many artifacts were preserved.

The two dwellings were situated alongside each other and shared a ceiling. Both were made of singe chambers. Walls were made of wood and isolated via layers of hay and clay. Hay was used in the making of the ceilings.

Upon the discovery, archaeologists found 80 to 120 clay dishes in each dwelling. Remains of crops were preserved in some dishes. These discoveries demonstrate the level to which agriculture was developed in the area.

 St. Nikolai Monastery
Skravena’s monastery St. Nikolai is situated two km north of the village and the building is seen while traveling on international road E-79.

Much of the monastery’s history remains unknown. Between 1939 and 1941 archaeologists explored the area and discovered the foundations of the old monastery. It was supposedly constructed during the reign of tsar Petur over the remains of a pagan sanctuary and was destroyed during the Ottoman reign.

In 1944, a nun named Liudmila arrived in the area. She said that St. Nikolai appeared in her dreams and told her to become a nun. In the coming years, the nun collected funds and managed the construction of the monastery over the remains of the old one.

Klisoura is a picturesque town situated between Stara Planina and Sredna Gora mountains. It is 25 km away from the town of Koprivshtitsa and 100 km away from Sofia. The town is known for its revolutionary activities, especially during the April Uprising in 1876. The brave opposition of locals led to conflagrations and the destruction of the town.

In 1926, Klisoura’s community center was named a monument to mark 50 years since the uprising. Locals made donations for the construction of the center. Funds were collected over a period of 30 years. Upon its opening, the community center turned into a vital place for culture development.

Today, the building houses Klisoura’s history museum. Some of the most valuable items are a cherry-tree cannon and a bell that signaled the beginning of the April Uprising on April 20 1876. The museum has an art gallery that...

Nearly 40 types of mammals, 21 types of amphibians and reptiles and 10 types of fish inhabit Sreburna, one of the best known preserves in Bulgaria.

Sreburna is situated 16 km west of the town of Silistra. The preserve includes a lake carrying the same name and the surrounding territories.

 Vuvedenie Bogorodichno Monastery
The monastery is situated near the center of Sopot. According to some historians, the nun Sousana founded it in 1665. Only a small chapel existed until that moment. Residential buildings were constructed near it.

In 1877, most of the complex was burned down during an Ottoman assault. The church, some of the residential buildings and the hiding place of revolutionary Vassil Levski remained intact.

The complex had its special studio, where books were copied in the past. Nuns also learned icon painting.

Architecture is what makes the church and the monastery worth exploring. The church is halfway dug into the ground and resembles another unique sanctuary, the church in the village of Dobursko. Make sure you take a look at the wall painting from the 17th century that has been called the headless saints.

Today, the monastery has been completely...

Daskalova Kushta (teacher’s house) in Triavna is the place where the only specialized woodcarving museum in Bulgaria is situated. The house itself has been named a monument of culture, since it carries the typical Triavna revival style. Construction took place between 1804 and 1808.

While decorating the house, local craftsmen decided to compete in the creation of the most beautiful woodcarving. The two worked nearly six months on the ceilings of two rooms.

As a result, sun carvings decorate the two ceilings. The outcome of the competition is unknown but it was considered the first arts competition to be carried out in the country. As a result, the house turned into a museum dedicated to woodcarving.

The old part of the coastal town of Nessebar is really tiny. The plot that it covers is only 850 m long and 350 m wide. This piece of land is connected to the main part of Nessebar through a tine strip of land. Part of this 'old town' is rapidly growing, merging Nessebar with the nearby towns and resorts.

Numerous archaeological finds prove that this place is truly old. Over the centuries a third of the old town disappeared in the sea. Remains of the city wall can still be seen today in the water, hundred meters away from the shore.

Many buildings from the revival period have been preserved. They all demonstrate the typical for the time architecture. Old mills and fountains can be seen as well.

Nessebar was named an architecture and archeology preserve in 1956. In 1983, UNESCO added the monuments there in its World Heritage List.

One of the oldest settlements in the foot of Rila Mountain hides in its heart a real historic treasure.

The village of Dobursko is situated 180 km away from Sofia and 20 km away from the resort of Bansko. There, you can explore one of the 100 national tourist sites, namely the church St. St. Teodor and Tiron Stratilat.

The church was constructed in 1614. Many historians have examined it and written books and research papers about the sanctuary.

Structure enabled the church survive Ottoman rule, since nearly half of the building is dug into the ground. St. St. Teodor and Tiron Stratilat is plain and almost unnoticeable from the outside, a fact compensated for by the interior that is richly painted and decorated.

The unique wall paintings make historians wonder. Many rumors and stories about their origin have been circulated. Some of the theories focus on the modernistic...

 Velianova House
Velianova house is one of the best preserved edifices in the resort of Bansko from its revival-time period. It was constructed in the end of the 18th century and was presented as an award to locals by the craftsman Ousta Velian Ognev, one of the people who worked on the decoration of Sveta Troitsa church.

The house itself is a typical enforced edifice. It has two floors. The ground floor has a hiding place, comprised of two connected chambers. The second floor has a residential part and a chardak (a type of a covered terrace that is typical for old Bulgarian houses). Only wood and stone were used in the construction.

Interior decorations are the most notable part of the house. Wall paintings in the so-called blue room happen to be the most attractive, as they present landscapes from Venice and Istanbul. The house’s chardak features beautiful...

Rila Monastery is situated close to the town of Blagoevgrad and the trip from Sofia to it is relatively short.
