Belogradchik Rocks

Belogradchik Rocks is probably the best known rock phenomenon in Bulgaria. The amazing natural formations can be observed near the town of Belogradchik. Cliffs are situated in an area of 30 km and have been divided into three groups. The central one is considered to be most interesting for observation.

Throughout time, weather conditions have shaped the rocks. Their red color comes from the availability of iron. Some cliffs are nearly 200 m high. People have named some of the rocks based on their shape. Tourists can explore Horseman, Madonna, School Girl, Adam and Eve and Cuckoo among many others.

A legend has been told about many of these shapes.

One of the legends describes the love of a nun and a Roman. A child was born to the nun and monks decided to punish her for the sin. The Roman tried to save his love and their child. Nature intervened and a thunder turned all into stones. A group of rock phenomena formed in this manner.

The high cliffs near Belogradchik host a Roman fortification, which later saw the use of Bulgarians and Ottomans. The Belogradchik fortress is another famous landmark in the region.
